After having made god experiences with Sailor and Pilot pens I become more and more interested in Platinum pens.
I especially like the look of the
- Platinum Pesident (resin)
- Platinum President Maki-e “Uroko-mon”
- Platinum Hammered Siler collection
- Platinum Galaxy Starlight and the
- Platinum Celluloid Stone
These are not really "cheap" pens so I'm looking for some overall comments on those.
How does quality in terms of visual appereance and craftsmanship compare to Sailor or Pilot?
What about the writing qualities and nibs?
Do you know if there are any retailers in Europe for those pens? I've seen "cyberpens.uk" selling two models from Platinum (but not the ones I was looking for).
Many thanks for your input in advance.
Cheers
Michael
I own one Platinum pen: the Maki-e Rabbit&Moon that I bought from a FPN seller who is fairly active on the marketplace here. I bought it at a considerable discount and would probably not have gotten it full-price. I also have many Sailor and Namiki/Pilot pens, so I can readily compare it to these two.
The nib on my Platinum is much more similar to my Pilot/Namikis than to my Sailors: Platinum and Namiki nibs have a soft, springy quality to them, whereas I find Sailors more rigid. However, if I were to compare Platinum to Namiki, I prefer the Namiki. Can't tell you why exactly, it is the subjective feeling of writing with them. I like my Platinum quite a lot because of the specific Maki-e design on it, and it is a good writer. But I will probably not buy another one any time soon, preferring to put another Namiki or Sailor on my list first.

I don't own any of the models you're interested in, but I do own two platinum pens (not counting brush pens and disposables), one of which is a phoenix maki-e. I have found the workmanship, appearance, and writing qualities to be on a par with Pilot and Sailor. The maki-e pen has a nib that Richard Binder reground to a cursive italic and is one of my favorite pens. I hope you find one you like; I doubt you'll be disappointed.
The hammered silver pens are really special. The pen depicted below has a Platinum nib, not a gold nib. It is laleeled Pt 790Writes well. I have seen the Sparkling Galaxy pen at the DC pen show last august, and it was truly spectacular. Platinum's music nib is one to be recommended. Ruud

I love my Platinum 3776's in Medium and Music nibs. Just wish the pens were a little larger.

I personally prefer Namiki and Sailor's nib over Platinum's, BUT this is strickly personal taste. If you have no experience with platinum nibs, I would suggest buy a cheaper one to test out the nib (or borrow a friend's) before venture into more expensive pens. I think this is a good advice for any pen brands.
Best,

I have the Very Presidential, and it is a nice pen. The others are all too small for me.

What is the difference between the Platinum President and Very Presidential?

Depending on how you look at it, they are the same.
In Japan the top of the line is the Presidential. The same pen is sold overseas as the Very Presidential.

I thought I read somewhere that the Very Presidential was a bit larger than the Presidential.

I have the latest Platinum catalogue in front of me and there is no Very Presidential listed. they are the same with the VP for foriegn consumption. the Presidential sold overseas is smaller.

Many thanks so far for your comments!
Do you know if Platinum pens are sold somewhere in Europe (besides the two models being sold by cyberpens UK).
Cheers

I don't know if it helps but Richie may be able to get other models, too.
