I guess that now that I've written my first post in another category, I should introduce myself here!

I'm Ian - the nickname UpMyKilt has been a long term nickname in some circles... and yes, I've worn a kilt on occasion wink.gif.

Originally from Northern Ireland, but emmigrated to Canada with my parents - still love returning to my "home" and love going through old family records where writing was beautiful and have come across written family records dating back hundreds of years from both Scotland and Ireland.

My own penmanship sucks - especially after more than a decade of mostly keyboard use for communicating and writing, but I love fountain pens and fine paper.

I've been lurking here on the Fountain Pen Network for a few weeks, have very much enjoyed reading so many posts, so much great information - in fact, probably have spent WAY too much time here - probably because it is winter and my most major passion is fly fishing - something not easily done in my part of the world when getting dumped on regularly with 20 and 30 cm of snow!

Thanks to you all for some great information here - it's been a pleasure browsing and reading!

Welcome, Ian!

Glad to see you making yourself a nice little getaway here.

While you're running around here, I'm poking around your site. I need to get fly fishing lessons, heh.

Thanks smile.gif I'm sure there are a number of good fly fishing instructors in Colorado - don't know of any personally, but I can probably find some through connections.

Colorado has some amazing fly fishing opportunities and I'd love to visit someday.

Send me an email if you're interested, and I'll get you a short list of people to contact. General area that you are in would be helpful.

It's a great sport and pasttime! You'll be buying the Fly Fisher's Journal from Ren-Art smile.gif

What do you do with the flies when you've caught them? Do you throw them back or eat them?

Anyway, welcome in to the FPN.

Welcome to FPN, Ian!!!! Fly-fishing eh?
I live in Michigan, and I do my fly-fishing on the Au Sable and Pere Marquette rivers in Northern Michigan. have you ever fished there? Use a Winston and custom rod, made on a Sage blank. And do you know Rusty in Grayling, MI?

welcome to FPN Ian. Not much flyfishing going on here right now in Alberta either - getting dumped on again (and it's -24 C....). I haven't had much time or opportunity to angle in the last several years, but I keep trying to get back into it! Meantime, it's winter. If you're tired of tying flies, you can always play with pens smile.gif

Thank you, Wolverine.

Unfortunately, I have not fly fished Northern Michigan, but do want to. I'd love to be on the Au Sable! Most of the fishing I do is in south western Ontario - have you ever heard of the Saugeen River? It's a trib of Lake Huron. Also the Grand River is only about 20 minute drive for me.

I live in what is known as "The Headwaters" region of south western Ontario... where I'm not far from the headwaters of The Grand, the Credit, Nottawasaga, Saugeen, and Pine rivers.

Last year, I focussed a lot on loch or lake style fly fishing and tried to learn as much about that as possible which was an interesting experience.

Which Winston rod do you have? I'm sure that is a lovely rod to fish with!

Did you build your own custom rod? I used to do that - but a divorce meant selling the house and therefore no room to do it any longer.

Thank you, Lifesaver!

What part of Ireland, do you know?

If you get the chance to visit, try and make some friends and hook up with some of your wife's second cousins... it can be very expensive to visit there while also paying for accommodations in hotels and eating in restaurants.

But it is a beautiful land!

Thanks, limesally!

I have a friend not far from Grand Prairie and I've been hearing about the bone chilling cold out there! What part of Alberta are you in?
