I posted a general question over at Writing Instruments, but this may be a more targetted forum for the question.

I am in possession of my late grandfather's Sheaffer PVM V. The condition of the pen appears to be good (no dings, cracks, etc. - snorkel extends and retracts). How do I tell if the innards work (without killing the pen)? I am completely new to the snokel system.

I appreciate all your suggestions. I'll attempt to add pictures of the pen tonight.

First off, congratulations on getting such a great pen. This will be your front line pen for years to come.

It's probably safe to assume the sac in the pen has deteriorated after 40+ years, unless your grandfather had some work done to the pen since the 1960s.

The general opinion when it comes to unrestored Snorkels is to find a good repair person and send it off for refurbishing.

Thanks! I'm going to send it off then - any suggestions on good Sheaffer repair places?

Note that it's not just a bad sac that can cause problems: if either the sac or the point seal leaks, moisture getting into the works can make a rusty mess of the innards of any Snorkel-filling pen.

It depends on where you live. I prefer the local pen shops, 'cause you're giving business to local folks.

If not, there are others out there who can restore your pen. It probably will take longer and you're going to have to mail your pen (which one should avoid as much as possible).

If you tell us where you live, we can help you find a local pen shop.

Have you already inked the pen? You may try it first with water and then with ink to see if it works fine or not. That's what I do with any vintage pen I get before sending it to restoration. I did it with my own PFM V and it worked great (and still does).
