Full Version: Blues, need comments

Ok. Here is the deal.

In my next order, I was planning to get PR American blue. It seems a very nice shade that pops up, and all reviews are good.

Also, Noodlers Baystate bleu came along, and people are talking about how much it pops out as a color, so this did sound like very good option too!

I was starting to think, well... maybe I'll get both. Not that I need another blue, but that is another story.

But, as I was looking for a visconti color to get (need that VBottle), the blue was in the top 2 where people were saying how much it is a nice shade and all!

So now, I can't get 3 blue inks on my next order...

I need recommendations... anybody have comparative scans? comments?

BTW, the objective would be to get the number of blue lower, not higher... I will NOT order 4 blue!

Thanks!

Maybe you should order a sampler and try for yourself. You could get the 3 blues and another color or could even go with an additional blue.

If you don't want to do that, perhaps this ink comparison will help:

It doesn't have American Blue, but it does have DC Supershow. I think the book on American vs. DC is that DC is a bit deeper but the two are very close (as though DC was possibly based on American).

I don't have any of your candidate blues. I want the Visconti. Baystate is on its way to me. I went with DC instead of American for whatever reason and don't feel the need to try American since they're apparently so close.

Well, I've got BSB on order and am looking forward to it. Visconti Blue is my favorite blue and I've got a tried a few (25+). PR inks tend to be slow drying and, as a lefty, that's a bit of a problem, plus I don't like waiting to turn pages. I'd skip the PR, but that's just me. wink.gif

On the issue of slow drying, this righty has never noticed a problem with PR DC Supershow Blue. I have most certainly seen slow dry times, too -- I also own and love both Tulipe Noire and its massive dry time and PR Midnight Blues with its somewhat faster but still very slow dry time.

Actually, Rohrer & Klingner Black is also a bit of a slow drier in the fat medium nib on my Harley Davidson Phileas-style pen.

Someone's already provided you with a comparative scan; I've not seen Baystate in person yet, but the written examples of the other two look accurate. One consideration is drying time: Visconti is quicker than Private Reserve and, I expect, the Baystate (though diluting with water fixes that particular problem). Another: if you do decide to get Visconti Blue, don't buy Omas Blue as well (or vice versa) - at least via the pens I've tried them in they look the same.

I know I bought Visconti Blue because of a review here by someone with beautiful handwriting -- I was swayed by his scans (and his persuasive enthusiam)! Have you seen that review? On a whim recently, I loaded Visconti Blue (which I haven't used for quite awhile as the truer blues aren't my favorite) in my Pelikan GO! with the Deb Kinney cursive italic nib. The nib is fairly broad. Wow! It looks so rich and intense -- I mean, especially rich; pen selection does make a difference -- flowing out of that wet nib that I feel the urge to get some FPN penpals just so I can write them with that pen and ink combo.

I've tried a Pear Tree Pen ink sample of D.C. Supershow Blue, and it was very blue, but the Visconti Blue in certain pens just seems vibrant. You are right, the reviews of PR American Blue give it a thumbs up, and that Baystate Blue certainly seems to pop in the scans. Isn't that part of the fun, the agony of deciding?

I am in the same situation, i am still searching for the perfect blue, I have yet to try visconti but I may go for it next, partly because of the beautiful bottle, if you are not sure get the pear tree sampler though!

YEah, pear tree sampler may be a solution... but it is like a drug. I end up getting sample for other colors, I like them a lot, then I need to place another order because I ran out of that color, and it all starts the loop again!

Thanks

In my opinion, Visconti Blue looks very much like PR Lake Placid Blue and Sheaffer Slovenian Blue. In other words, it is a true blue with no green or purple elements. It is not as dark as PR American Blue or PR DC Supershow Blue. It does not have the purple elements that appear in Omas Blue or Waterman Florida Blue.

PR American blue is my standard blue, though my next order will include naples blue (haven't gotten to the stores yet). I like the private reserve inks a lot. You won't be unhappy with it, unless you like a lot of shading; PR American blue has precious little shading, which is the only reason it is not the absolute perfect ink for me. (not that i have found it)

Then again, I should warn you, I prefer washable inks.
