Does anybody know of a good dark purple ink? I was thinking about Noodler's Nightshade but apparently it's more of a brownish purple than a true dark purple....can someone put up a sample of it for me? Much appreciated :-)

I'm sure there is a comparison review somewhere. I've ordered Waterman's Purple, after extensive research.

PR Tanzanite

* I LOVE the FPN Tulipe Noire, but I think its more of a 'claret' colour - beautiful on the page and good on a bunch of papers, but its a reddish tone to my eye....

Yes, Noodler's Nightshade is nice but more of a dark burgundy.

I'd really recommand Noodler's Purple Martin, Purple Wampum or Montblanc Violet. They are all dark, intense purple inks leaning more or less towards a nice aubergine color.

Actually I prepared a review of the MB violet with comparing scans of the others but right now my website upload does not work :-(

Cheers

I think Waterman purple still is one the darkest "true" violet inks; at least it used to be.

There's also J. Herbin's Poussiere de Lune. It is not so much purple as dark violet. It's even sometimes considered a burgundy (although, interestingly, it is far closer to the color of dried burgundy wine than to the color of most burgundy inks). Violets typically do not render well online, but here are a couple of good samples:
http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...ost&p=61186
http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...st&p=154136

I had been looking for a burgundy, and I thought this ink was a little too purple for my tastes. Lately, though, it's begun to grow on me.

Tanzanite looks dark blue to my vision. Levenger's Amethyst is nice, Tulipe Noire can range from purplish black to reddish depending on the pen nib, Waterman Purple is a true purple. However PR Plum looks more like the flesh inside the plum than the outside skin color of a black one.

I have found the new MB Violet to be the darkest purple I have yet seen. It is nearly a black purple and it flows well and seems to dry quickly. So far, I really like it.
RayMan
J. Herbin Violette Pensee, Pelikan Violet, and Diamine Imperial Purple.

Caran D'Ache Storm is also nice, but to me it looks greyish purple (which I assume is the meaning of the name).

PR Tanzanite is gorgeous. Unfortunately, it takes forever to dry, and smears like crazy (especially if you use it on high quality paper like Clairefontaine).

The newer MB inks, their violet and British racing green, are complex, great inks. Are they made by a different company than their older line inks? Does anyone know who makes them?

Waterman Purple or PR Tanzanite.

Here's a comparative scan I did with a bunch of purple inks. Of course, it's a bit dated now as I've got more. Check out the link, but be aware that purple is probably THE hardest color family to get to show up properly on the computer.

If you want, PM me your snail address and I'll send you scribbles and swabs of the purples I have.

I made a very dark violet/purple color out of PR Arabian Rose and PR DC Supershow Blue if you're into the whole mixing thing. I think I put my recipe in the recipes thread.

If you like Noodler's at all, I highly recommend Purple Wampum for a really dark purple. It's darker than any of the scans of ink on southpaw's sampler (at least the way they look on my monitor).

I really like it.

Depending on the batch, Nightshade is either a very dark purplish brown or a very dark blackish purple with a hint of blue; both, applied with a wet writer, look almost black (dilution and a dryer writer or italic nib make the colour more apparent). Noodler's Violet seems a better bet to me: true purple, and dark (though as I'm not sure just what you mean by "dark" it's hard to say whether any of these would be too dark; if they aren't, I suspect that most other companies' purples - Waterman, Diamine Imperial Purple, etc., won't be dark enough unless your pen is really wet).

Hows Diamine Violet?

My favorite Dark Purples are Private Reserve Tanzanite and Montblanc Purple. They are both dark. The first is on the blue end of the purple spectrum, while the second is on the red end.

Caran d'Ache Storm
FPN Tulipe Noire

I love these two. Both are used daily. Nightshade and Le Couleur Royale are probably my favorite inks. NS gives me a muted grape color. These inks are my most used.

Yes, Noodler's Nightshade is nice but more of a dark burgundy.

I asked a while back what color people thought Nightshade was, no one could really come up with much of an answer. But burgundy? I'm not seeing that. I found the FPN exclusive Tulipe Noire to be a sort of lighter shade of Nightshade.

Those 2 Noodler's colors are indeed nice, dark purples. I'm experimenting with mixes involving Purple Wampum at this time and they can be pretty nice looking.

Are violet and purple really the same color? I've always thought they were different colors.

Indeed, it's a nice ink. I've found that Purple Wampum neat can feather on some papers if you get a lot of it flowing, but in mixes with bulletproof colors it's very well behaved, and interesting.

I think Nightshade is some sort of a dusty, greyish burgundy with both aubergine and brownish tones. As soon as my "website uploader" works again I will post a sample.

You are correct; actually they are! But like many others I still use them synonymical (I should stop doing this).

Please see:

Wikipedia and

but then MB really is purple and not violet :-)

Am I the only one who loves Private Reserve Purple Mojo?

This is a great purple, if you are a true purple fan. It is REALLY PURPLE. Dark, with no red tones, slightly bluish.

Waterman's Purple is my favourite, and widely available. never heard of a problem, on the contrary, helps many pens.

Ditto. I basically only write with dark purple ink and these are my top three, in this order - I couldn't agree more with Michael. Just my two cents smile.gif

Nope. One of my favorites. A very dark purple.

Looks great in a 1.5mm stub! thumbup.gif

I have an unwanted bottle of Private Reserve in Burgundy Mist. It's not entirely a true "dark purple" -- I'd call it more "wine stain" color -- but it's an interesting concoction. It annoys me. I use it, I get annoyed at the ink color. I've filled an Estie J once from it, otherwise it's full. I keep thinking I'm going to trade it for something REALLY exciting, but nobody offers me a free P51 or a toothbrush Duofold ...

Many Thanks for clarifying this!

As for purple I really love Poussière de Lune altough you'll need a very wet nib if you want it dark!

I'm not sure if it works - still in the experimental stage, but:

A cool colour

2 parts Parker Black Quink
3 parts Private Reserve Tanzanite

I'm not sure if this even is purple, but it's a cool colour anyway.

I don't have much experience with other purple inks but I've been using Waterman's purple and really like. I've attached pictures taken with and without the flash ('cause that changed the color in the picture a bit). First pic with flash, 2nd without.
