I have a box of pen parts that I toss left overs in. A few weeks ago I was looking for something and decided it was time to clean out the junk. As I was sorting I found all the parts to assemble a 51. Here is what I came up with.
The cap was dented beyond salvage so I gave it a hammered look. The barrel still has some odd discoloration on it that didn't polish out. Sorry if the photo isn't so great.

It's a beauty...I really like the modified 51 hammered cap look.
Have you done gold hammering before? That looks like you made a wonderful job of it...

I'm not a "51" person, but the work you did on that cap is wonderful- the hammering effect is present, yet subtle enough not to give away its aftermarket origins. It looks like a professional job.

Thanks for the kind words about the cap work.
I made a crude mandrel to fit inside the cap for support and then used a very small jeweler's hammer to make the dimples. I wasn't sure how far I could push the cap so in a few places the original lines show when the light is right. I found the cap to be surprisingly durable with respect to hitting with a hammer.
Once the dimples were in place I had to reshape the cap a bit on a real cap mandrel.
Thanks again,
Todd

I've gotten a few questions about the jewel. Yes it is aluminum and it is the only part that didn't start out as a Parker item. I've been spending some spare time in the machine shop to avoid the rain.
A similar jewel is in my other project pen that got a honking big nib from Greg Minuskin. That post is
here.
Thanks again to everyone.

Todd,
Really like that cap, got to be the best use for a beat up GF cap. I am still looking for a beat up silver cap to do the same with
I just love the pens I make from old bits, I have a "51" aero and am just finishing off a 61 Flighter, made up from basically scrap bits. The ultimate in recycling
Great job
Jim
