I've been shopping online for vintage Vacs, and I keep seeing "nib numbers". Is there some chart or listing somewhere that explains what the nib numbers equate to? I find that I really need a fine or an extra fine nib, and I'm getting confused. unsure.gif

Thanks in advance.

Numbering nibs to denote tip grade and writing qualities is a relatively recent development (though adopted in Germany significantly earlier than elsewhere). The numbers stamped on Vac nibs denote the date of manufacture. Numbers on other vintage nibs normally denote nib size (overall dimensions, not tip size), though there was no standardization regarding what each number meant.

Vintage,

Thanks for the prompt reply. What advice would you offer for searching for a finer nibbed vacumatic? Any words of wisdom?

Fine and extra-fine nibs are the most common ones found, at least on US-made Vacs (Canadian nibs tend to run wider). You should have no trouble whatsoever finding what you seek.
