Full Version: VP nibs - fine, medium, broad

I'm getting a couple of VP's as noted earlier. I was given a choice by the seller, though. Wait another week or so for a shipment of medium nibbed VP's or switch to fine or broad nibs.

Now, I like a medium-ish line. Fine is normally too scratchy for me. Frustrates me when a pen won't put down a steady line. So, I'm usually safe with a medium nib. My friend has been using rollerballs and this will be the switch for him. So... How do your VP's write? Are you using fine, medium, or broad nibs? This is my first venture into these pens, so I don't really know how well they write vs the mediums I'm used to, of course.

Any thoughts or advice?

I would go with a medium. I own six or seven VP's and a Fermo, with nibs of F, M, and a modified B-cursive-italic. The F I am using now has a slight toothiness, while the M's are nice, wet writers that are smooth and very 'steady.' What I mean by 'steady' is that perhaps due to the smallness of the nibs, they feel secure and effortless to write with--almost as worry-free as writing with a roller ball. With some other fountain pens with more prominent nibs, I find it harder to write on other than flat surfaces--like a notepad balanced on my knee. The VP's are very versatile writers, because of their hard, (and great) small nibs. biggrin.gif

I don't have a VP broad, so I can't comment on that, but I do have a fine and a medium. I really like the fine nib. I don't find it to be scratchy or temperamental at all; in fact it's one of my favorite nibs among all my pens. The medium writes a substantially broader line, a "true" medium, very smooth and wet. It's a little broader than I like, so I use the fine much more often, but from your post I gather you might prefer the medium. I also have a .7mm stub italic from Richard Binder that was ground from a medium, and I really enjoy that nib as well.

Thank you. smile.gif

I've been reading back a few pages trying to get some ideas. So far, I'm thinking I agree with you both, and that I need to stick with the medium for now. I can always get a custom nib later. And if my friend decides he doesn't like his... I'll take it back and I'll have two. wink.gif Guess I'd better just put instant gratification on hold for a bit. It's about time I did so, anyway.

Now I just need a video walkthrough of HDoug waxing the VP nib. biggrin.gif
