Full Version: Sailor Nib Question...

I have a Sailor 1911 Demonstrator with a fine nib that's one of my favorite pens (ok... they're all one of my favorites). I was told when I purchased it by the dealer that it's a fine point, and that's great for me as I tend to write a bit small and fine points have always suited me. Only problem is that it was a store demo pen (had only been dipped and no damage) that I was able to pick up for a great price, but... no booklet or anything with it. Couple of questions:

- How do I know or sure what size nib it is? I like fine nibs, and I'm told that Japanese pens have smaller nibs than the equivelently designated European nibs (e.g. a Sailor fine is smaller than a Visconti fine). I can't see a marking that appears to be an "F" or the like on it.

- I consider this an ideal nib for me, so what size in a european pen should I be buying? I have a fine nib ST Dupont Ophellio that I'm happy with, and a medium nib Visconti Wall Street that was a recent gift that I plan on either exchanging or selling in preference to a finer nib. I also have my Dad's P51 with a medium nib that I don't use often, primarily because the nib isn't fine enough for me (and I'm not sure I have the guts to get it reground or replaced due to sentimental reasons). I'm looking at another Visconti for my next pen, as well as a Tibaldi and Marlen to come somewhere thereafter. Should I be leaning to a fine nib on the Itallians? Or Extra-fine?

Thoughts would be helpful.

Sailor's F nib runs .3mm and would be similar to an American or European XF nib.

The nib should be stamped down low on the left-hand side, almost where it disappears into the section. The designation may be something like "H-F" for Hard (Firm) Fine.

This is the case for 1911M nibs, and Pro Gear nibs, so it should be the same for the 1911.
