This is a very quick look at the new Noodler's Baystate Blue that was mentioned in Marketplace last week. It looked interesting so I couldn't resist ordering a bottle. A few members were asking for someone to post their impressions, so here's mine. I'm sorry it's not a complete review, but just don't have the time now. But I hope this quick side-by-side helps.

Both samples were written with a Pelikan M805 with fine nib. The paper is not of the best quality and shows some feathering on this cheap paper. On a hard smooth paper such as HP 32lb, both inks have very sharp lines with little feathering.

Looks very nice, indeed. I'll have to see it in person, but it seems like it could be the waterproof blue that I've been looking for.
kiavonne
This bodes well, indeed. Thanks for the quick review! My Baystate Blue should arrive tomorrow.
Lloyd
Can you verify its water-resistance?
Jimmy James
I'm shocked by how much darker the DC looks than Bay State. This is the regular DC and not DC electric, right?

This ink is one I'm going to have to put on my list.
graceaj

That is a very nice blue. Now I'll have to get the DC supershow to know just how blue the Noodler's is. Unfortunately my local Noodler's dealer doesn't have any of the newer inks, and I doubt they'll have this either anytime soon. crybaby.gif

Is the Baystate Blue a Swisher Exclusive?

Looks very very nice.

To my eyes it looks like Visconti blue almost.

Does anyone know if this Ink (Baystate) is bulletproof?

I have not verified the waterproof claim. It was in the description in the link that was pointed to in the Marketplace last week (Luxury Brands) as "...waterproof when dry".

Actually I just stepped out and ran some water over a sample I wrote last night. Water alone, will not run at all. When rubbed with wet finger there is very slight blue cast on surrounding paper, yet no smear of the writing itself. Bottom line - will not smear when wet.

I figured as much, but I wanted to be sure.

This appears to be as big a difference as when I compare my DC to my Midnight Blues side by side. This new ink of Noodler's must be quite vibrant and bright.
Mameluke
Bah sorry I didn't mean feathering I meant nib creep.

Any nib creep with this ink?

(was really tired)

Thanks for sharing a writing sample of this hot new ink so quickly.
richardandtracy
That looks a beautiful bright blue. Maybe it's for the 'buy' list. Thanks for the review.

Regards

Richard.

Thanks very much for this review!!

You beat me to it! I just recently received this ink myself and it quickly became my favorite ink. It looks so much better in person too. I love writing in it now. (No offense to the picture taking at all either) I'll probably be purchasing another bottle soon just to have it in reserve.

It just seems to glow and jump off the page more than you can show in a scan or photo.

My scan is perhaps a touch overexposed making the whole page a little lighter. Comparing it to my original, the original is even more saturated and intense.

For whoever asked, there is no nib creep on my M805 fine.

Just looks like N's regular blue to me.

but IT"S WATER-RESISTANT!!! cloud9.gif

How's the drying time? (asked hopefully from a lefty)
fjf
Is it chalky?. Maybe we just found the nice and bright waterproof blue!.
penguinmaster
Drying time isn't too bad. Seems pretty normal to me.
kiavonne
I like this blue. I think it's going to become "my" blue.

It feathered only slightly on G. Lalo verge, but dried fairly quickly. And, yes, it is water resistant. I did a little test tonight. I ran a sample under the faucet for about 1 minute. I don't know what it would do with an overnight soak. I troughed the paper a little, to keep the upper portion from getting wet. You can see where the ink and water runoff were. smile.gif

Ok, then. I just did the same on some cheap notebook paper I had. When it is dry, I'll post it. I ran water over it until the bottom of the paper was near transparent and felt like it was going to fall apart. The ink had no runoff. It wasn't even phased in the slightest. Might take a little while for this one to dry enough for a scan, though. edit: actually, as it is drying, I can see a bluish cast in the paper. It didn't runoff like on the G. Lalo, but some (not much) did absorb into the paper.

Oh man, this is something I have not encountered before. I got one of these yellow Lami Safari pens shown here, and using converter to fill the pen, it has stained the yellow plastic above the nib. It will not wash off with water, and now my pen looks like (Potty Mouth), although I do like the Baystate blue ink color.

Is this typical that plastics like this stain?

Wow, I even tried some Isopropyl rubbing alcohol on Q-tip, and even that would not remove it. Now I'm really mad.

If this is typical that an ink like this stains the plastic of common fountain pens, there should have been a warning.

Seemed like it dried pretty fast to me. I couldn't smudge it on either of my sample papers. The G. Lalo has a slicker surface, too. It does feather a little bit, but hardly enough to notice, really. It didn't bleed through on the G. Lalo, but it did some with the cheapo notebook paper I tested.

Yikes. I used it in a blue Safari, so I wouldn't notice if it stained. I filled a cleaned, empty Lamy cartridge with the ink. On bulletproof inks, though, and the near bulletproof inks, my test of soaking them in Isopropyl alcohol didn't touch them. Plain ol' water did on the near bulletproof, washing away the color. I wonder if there isn't a different, yet still safe, cleaning solution you can try.

I posted a photo of it in this thread. If this is something unusual, I think there should have been a clear warning given. I'm gonna call Swisher Pens to see what they say, since I bought the ink and pen from them.

From the last scans it looks like a purple-blue. Is it my monitor?. The staining of the yellow plastic may mean that this is not a dye-based water solution, but (likely) an organic solvent. How does it smell?. Try immersing the plastic in a bit of (diluted?) bleach. It might help.

Let me see what Swisher's says, as I left a message with their receptionist this morning. It seems to smell almost the same as Noodler's Midnight Blue. Nothing especially noteworthy about its smell.

Thanks so much for the scans and reviews! I'm trying to cut down on my ink purchases, so it was lovely to satisfy my curiosity in this new ink, however vicariously. thumbup.gif

Sorry about the damage to that yellow FP. I've had problems with some of the Noodler's Eternals irreversibly staining my Pelikan M200 Demos, but an opaque pen? How upsetting!
