Full Version: such a deal!

Yesterday I walked into a "Fine Leather Goods" store in Salina Kansas. One side is Western wear-high end, price wise, it seems to me. The other side has office stuff. Desk pens, wallets, brief cases, globes, etc. In one showcase is about a dozen MB's-144 size. Half are black rollerballs, half are red fountain pens. All are priced $220. That is already a good deal, and there is a sign that says all Mont Blancs 20% off. I am no math whiz but I figure that is roughtly $40 off so I pick one FP with a two toned fine nib and go to pay for it. The lady, who is the owner of the store, gets out a pad and says let's see, that is 20 off. I am thinking she means 20 dollars off and i said I thought it was 40. She says oh right and continued calculating the cost. She tells me it is $132.00+ tax, and I pay and leave. As I was driving down the Interstate, I realize she took 40 PERCENT off, not 40 dollars.

I have had that happen a couple of times. It was a moral dimemma, but in all cases I returned to the store and presented the problem. In every case, the seller had realized the mistake later. All but two of the sellers allowed me to keep the merchandise at the price I paid. One seller recalculated the price but gave me a gift certificate for the difference. That was really nice. Of course, one seller recalculated the price, but was so very glad I came back to make ammends. In all cases I felt better.

But, that is just me. In any case, I hope you enjoy the pen.

I like you Frank! I do the same thing simply because it is the right thing to do.

Thank you.

Frank has the right idea. I buy a lot at local hardware store and they all know me there. One day I had picked up some stuff and one was a stainless steel flex hose. It later dawned on me that they did not bill me for it. I had already used it so I stopped in the store, got another one, paid for it and then handed it back and told them to re-stock the hose and what they had done. Sadly, they were stunned and could not believe it. That should be the normal, not something stunning.

If they honor the 40% you have a super deal and you heart is content. If they do not, you got a great deal and you heart is content. It's a win-win game that you can't loose in.

I do plan to go back and present a check for the difference, even though it is quite a drive to go back there.

maybe she inteded to give you 40% off to shift the pen. wouldn't be unusual to discount stock to get it out the door, I would have thought...

Hello,

when such a mistake occurs to me, I give the "bonus" to my local church into the collecting box for the poor. My consciousness is at ease with this solution of the moral dilemma. I give the money away in the name of the seller and me. Maybe this is useful for you also.

God bless,
Anna

That's the best money-saving story I've read or encountered ever since I bought lunch at a cafe once and paid with a ten dollar bill and got fifteen dollars back. (I ran off before the clerk realised her mistake).

41 cents will make it a lot closer - that's what the post office is for. smile.gif
