I have been putting off this purchase for years and finally pulled the trigger! Montblanc Agatha Christie FP (Fine), number 2932/300000.

I have wanted this pen since I first saw it in 1994 or 95, but back then $600.00+ for a pen was beyond my reach. Now that I finally have one I must say that I am surprised. I writes beautifully! I actually found myself expecting that it would be only a mediocre writer. So many of my MBs are.

I purchased it in new condition and un-inked, but filled it after a 30 second argument with myself over whether I should or not. lticaptd.gif I am glad I won the argument. Or did I lose it?? That's one of the problems of arguing with yourself. It can be confusing.

Yesterday I put it in my pocket and went down to my local pen shop to pick up a new 1.1 nib for my Lamy and some supplies. The owner said it was the first Agatha to ever walk through his door in the 14 years he has been in business. I was a bit surprised by that. I really don't think that a population of 30000 is that rare, but perhaps people just don't carry them that much. The clip on my has quite a bite so I will be carrying mine! thumbup.gif

I do have one question. On the MB website it says that 23000 fountain pens were made. On my pen it has 2932 / 30000 which I am assuming is number 2932 of 30000. Does anyone know why the discrepancy?

Possibly a fake. I'll do some research.

It seems to be legit. See this:

Also out of 30,000. Although be aware they made a more valuable Gold Vermeil version out of 4,810 as well. Good Luck.

From the Montblanc website:
Launch: 1993
Limitation: 23,000 Fountain Pens
18,000 Ballpoint Pens
7,000 Sets, including a fountain pen, ballpoint pen and a mechanical pencil
  • Black precious resin
  • 925 sterling silver
  • Snake’s eyes set with rubies
  • Rhodium-plated 18-karat gold nib
I'm not sure what the serial #s of the sets were.

the 30,000 is right. because the 7000 sets are included in the total number of pens made. Did you get a box with this? Ususally the number begain with sets so your number is lower than 7000 it could be a part of a set.

I misread the number of the pen. It is actually 2374/30000. My apologies. Guess it was the lighting or maybe I'm just getting old. rolleyes.gif No.... it was definitely the lighting. blush.gif I don't know how I saw 2932 in 2374. At least I got the 2 right. I find that happening more and more for some reason! Sheesh!

Yes. I got the paperwork and the original receipt with the pen, but not the box. The original owner did not have it or would not sell it with the pen, but as I stated I did get the paper work and the original receipt. He may have been saving the box for the other pieces of the set. In the auction he simply stated that he didn't keep the boxes for any of his pens.

The comment about it being below 7000 is an interesting point of it being a part of the three piece set, but the receipt included the serial number and the number of the pen and the pen was bought as only the FP. I can only assume that perhaps the sets were not given the lower numbered pens.

By the way, has anyone ever seen a fake Montblanc Agatha or for that matter any of the writer's series FPs? I haven't. I know fakes of the common MBs are out there regularly and the ones I have seen are obvious knockoffs. Very poorly done.

Thanks for the input all!

Is the recipt from MB? If not than I truly believe that your pen is from a set. Some poeple break it up to sell it for more money. But any ways the best way is to post some picture of your pen. But I properly would not worry too much as you said most MB fakes are done poorly and if you did your reserach you will not get fool.
Enjoy your pen and have fun with it.

No the receipt is from a San Francisco Pen Shop not Montblanc. I will try to post some photos soon.

Thanks again for the input!

I checked out my 3 pc - and it's serial is the following:

05232/30000

so the under 7000 set theory is looking accurate

First, congrats on the new pen. Speaking only for myself, I would feel uncomfortable going about town with a snake hanging out of my shirt pocket.

It does sound like the pen was part of a set that was broken up almost immediately on hitting the retail market. I have seen that happen any number of times. If fact, I have a couple of FP's that were part of sets. I wanted the FP and some other buyer wanted the related pen, whether a BP or a RB. The seller accommodated us by splitting the set.

I am glad the pen writes well. It sounds like I have had different experiences with my MB pens, as mine have all written admirably well, even the used ones. At any rate, I hope you enjoy your pen for many years to come.
