Just in case some of the people who visit the CS forum don't visit our Chatter forum I thought I'd crosspost a link to a post that Martin made yesterday - http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...showtopic=51043 . Very sad news to hear of the passing of Jonathan Donahaye. I only ever had the pleasure of exchanging a few e-mails with him and will always class his website as an invaluable resource for anything about vintage Conway Stewart.
The original post that Martin refers to can be seen in the Zoss Archive - http://www.zoss.com/pens.archive/
I'm sure his loss will be deeply felt by anyone who has even the slightest interest in Conway Stewart pens.

Some of you may be interested in the following. It was penned by Barry Rose (Writetime) on behalf of those of us who knew Jonathan, exchanged information and traded pens with him over many years.

Jonathan Donahaye - an appreciation

In the world of pen collecting, there are many enthusiasts who specialise in one name-brand, and that was certainly true of Jonathan Donahaye. Born in 1935, Jonathan was a highly skilled and internationally-known entomologist, as well as having a passion for Conway Stewart pens.

Helped by his brother, Daniel, he amassed what must have been one of the most comprehensive Conway Stewart collections anywhere in the world. And then, having acquired all those pieces, he went one step further, and not only methodically catalogued them, but also created a comprehensive website with information about measurements, history, as well as including photographs, not just from his own collection, but from other sources as well. To many of us, this was a mine of readily available information, and something that we took for granted would always be there. Indeed, it was sometimes referred to in auction catalogues as 'the Donahaye listing'.

Recently, Jonathan had begun to sell his collection, and most of the signatories here have been able to enrich their own collections with several of his items - items we probably would not have been able to acquire from elsewhere.

With Jonathan's passing, we send our sympathy to his family, and everyone else who mourns his loss.

Very saddened to hear this. There's no way condolences can be passed to his family from here, I would certainly liuke to add mine if there was. However I would pass my thoughts to those here who were fortunate to know Jonathan. You are blessed with memories I'll never have.

A great loss, to this little world of pens in particular, but the world will be a lesser place without his generosity and care for those he would never even meet.

Very sad.

Jonathon's site made the collecting of Conway Stewart pens a much more pleasurable experience for us all. His offbeat sense of humour (on the web at least- I didn't meet him in person) was a delight.

The second fountain pen I owned (first gifted from my wife) came from Dr. Donahaye. Him and I communicated a few instances afterwards about his love of vintage CS pens and his background. It is a rarity in this suspicious, often self-centered world for someone to reach across the ocean to share some lines with a total stranger in such an open, warm manner. My condolences to his family and my wish for eternal happiness for him.

A great loss of a very kind and knowledgeable man.

whoever wants to send condolences to the family can send to me Dov<tadir@actcom.co.il> and I'll print out and deliver personally when I visit his wife Marcel, son Eyal and daughter Maya rtomorow. They are siting shiva, the 7 day Jewish mourning period after some one dies.

Yes you are all so correct. Jonathan was a true pen gent, of the breed one does not often find in the avaricious world of pen acquisitions. He was always ready to lend a helpful ear and advice on pens and anything else to stranger and friend alike.

At the IPC, Israel Pen Club, of which he was a founding member, he gave very instructive lectures on Conway Stewarts, shared his knowledge and sold pens to members at very reasonable prices even though he could have got a lot more on the bay.

Decision is to keep his site up and working, Mary Burke of CS has offered to host and I will take it up with the family when ik se them tomorrow.

Regards to all
Dov

This is just awful news.....

I corresponded with Jonathan on a number of occassions, the last time being only six weeks ago or so.

Its such a shame. He was clearly a lovely person and will be sorely missed by many.

My thoughts are with his family.

I'm not a regular visitor of the Conway Stewart Forum, so just only today I learned of the passing away of Jonatham Donahaye. What sad and shocking news!
I had the honour and pleasure of having an e-mail correspondence with him about one year ago, about some Conway Stewart associated brands I was reseaching for the 'Pen Brands World Wide' database I am still working on.
I learned a lot from him and I hope the incredible website he created will stay in existance if only as a digital virtual monument to help remembering a graet, but above all a kind and helpful person. My thoughts also go out to his family and those who were dear to him and I want to express my condoleances to them.
