So here I was this morning, prepping the six Conway Stewart pens we'll be taking to the Philly show as demonstrators (salable ones, of course), when Patrick, who is here for his regular Tuesday visit, expressed an interest in trying one of them. Well, the pen I had just finished was a Green Whirl Churchill with an EF nib. As you can see, this small boy handled the very large pen with aplomb, drawing assorted trucks -- his current passion -- for his Gran, who was sitting next to him. (This is not a staged shot, by the way. Patrick has been using fountain pens for more than a year.)

Patrick's interest in the pen also gave me a perfect opportunity to check out the photographic capabilities of my brandy-new cellphone, a Samsung SYNC. This sucker has a very nice 2-megapixel camera, and it also does MP3s and talks to the hands-free phone setup that's built into Bunter, my almost-new PT Cruiser:

Bottom line: Conway Stewart makes pretty pens, but they're not just eye candy. They write, and write well. And they're not so fragile you have to hide them away.

Wonder if he drives the PT as nicely as the Churchill!

I started mine young too, although, noew in their teens, they largely don't use fountain pens for regular school work. However they have a nice respect for good writing instruments and can recognise the value of some flex! The younger of my two has had phases with several modern pens (although base is a CS84) and is looking for a vintage one with some wild colours on the dreaded. He has very nice handwriting.

I actually considered Harriet -- and, in a brief moment of lunacy, Inspector Parker -- but Kate took one look at the car and said it was Bunter. I'm going to argue with Kate? Not in this lifetime. ohmy.gif

I have to admit, the new PT Cruiser is charming. I wonder if i should get one. It might make a good Vacmobile. Or is that VacQuackmobile??? Or sumthin.

Hi Richard,

The Churchill model is quite deceiving! Although it measures 14.5 cms when closed, it is a considerably light pen to write with.

Nelson: 45 gms
Churchill: 25 gms
Model 100: 20 gms

I hope you will have a great show.

Kind regards,

Mary Burke

Richard, do you recommend fine tuning nibs for left-handers? I've seen "left-handed nibs" for sale occasionally, but I'm not sure how necessary they are. I'm curious because my daughter is a lefty and I'd like her to start using FP's more "elegantly" than she does currently (it's like nails on a chalkboard when she writes with a FP).

Thanks,

Henry
