I am new to this site and had a great deal of trouble getting this far! You computer people should have mercy on us "old coots" when it comes to the dot com world! I have been a fountain pen user since high school in the 1950's. I started a journal in 1960 using a real pen --- I think it was an old Esterbrook ---- and have used nothing but real pens all of these years, except for one time when I lost my REAL fountain pen and had to use a "blanky blank" ball point for a few days. Just not the same. I have a small number of pens that I use on a regular basis. The Mont Blanc 146 is the most expensive, and I guess I use it the most. Next would be a Sheaffer of the Tiago Series (or something like that, starts with a T, I know.) It has a steel nib, and over the years because of damage to the nib, I have ordered a couple of replacements which come with a new sac assembly also. This pen has been a very good one since 1983 when my wife gave it to me, but I must admit that only the cap and the outside barrel are original. My dream is to get a new Peliken M1000. That is going to come to pass very soon, if nothing gets in the way of my money! My guess is that it will be a little larger than my MB 146, but my hands are large enough to handle it, I think, and I really like the size of the 146, so I guess I will be able to deal with a slightly larger pen. I am looking forward to learning more about pens on this site. While I was not able to "post" for awhile, I was able to read other people's writings. Somewhere along the way at this site, I learned something I should have know for years ---- that there is a famour nib maker in Germany called the Bock Company, or something like that. All for now. I hope I can figure out a way to get this foolishness posted!

Hi Charles, welcome to FPN!

I have heard of the Pelikan M1000 but I don't have any Pelikans myself. Don't have a Montblanc either.
I do have some Sheaffers. I think the model you have is the Targa.

Hope you'll stick around!

Welcome Charles.

Don't let the technology get you down, the fun you have on FPN is worth the effort.

If you haven't had the opportunity to hold a M1000 in your hands, I would encourage you to do so (if possible) before you buy one. It's a big pen - a really big pen. The M800 is a large pen that for me is a more practical size. Please ignore the following if you've been able to try a M1000 or already been to Richard's site. For a good size comparison, go to Richard Binder's site: http://www.richardspens.com/ ; then click on Pens and Specialty Nibs (on the left panel); then click on New Pens (top of left column); then click on Pelikan (top center); scroll down to find a selection of various models and information, you'll see: Illustration and Table for Size Comparison ; click on that and you'll see all the information you'll need.

Pelikans are great pens. I have several M200's, a couple of 140's, and one M800. I wouldn't mind having a few more - particularly a Toledo 900, but that will have to wait for awhile.

Have fun!
Deacon
Welcome! I hope some day to be considered an old coot, myself, but for now am just a poser. There is something ironic bout using the dot com world to explore what many consider archaic technology. You'll find a wealth of information here.

Cheers

Welcome Charles!

Welcome to FPN.

I vaguely remember running across a web site on Bock nibs and I believe that all Pelikan pens use Bock nibs as well as a few other major name pens. (But I could be mistaken. If I am I hope the Pelikan people don't come after me with swords and torches.)

Have fun on FPN!

Well Charles, I'm so glad you made it!

I hope that you enjoy the site, and learn a lot about those Esterbrooks you used to use.

Regards,

Gerry

Welcome to FPN! One of wonderful joys of this board is that we are a diverse group. We're users of old and new, collectors and folks that have just discovered "real pens".

Hope to see you around!

Hi Charles,

Welcome to FPN. Have fun here!

Have you been keeping a journal for over 40 years now? I've kept one for about 15 years, on and off. Have to admit that fountain pens make journalling much more fun!

Cheers,
Tom
