First why I think it will work: A) There is a rubber gasket built into the lower nib section of the pen (see photo below). I believe they do this so that the pen will screw together snuggly, and it does.
Now why I think it will not work (or at least will be difficult). The body of the pen and the ‘tail’ of the pen are connected with a large, metal ring. You can also see in both photos the large metal ring about two-thirds of the way down the body of the pen. This is more than decoration. As far as I can tell the main body and the ‘tail’ of the pen screw into this metal ring. In other words, they are held together by the metal ring. This is important for my interest here because there is metal inside the pen body. This is a major obstacle to ED conversion.
Now to my question: How can I get around this metal ring inside the body of the pen? I do not want to ignore and simply fill the pen with ink after siliconing the threads of the body it as this metal ring would surely corrode, if in contact with ink on a regular basis.
It seems to me there are two options to get around this problem. One, I could put some kind of sealant inside the entire body of the pen (like a shelac or something) that would prevent the ink from coming into contact with the metal ring. Two, I could put some kind of filler starting at the end of the pen and going past the metal ring but still leaving ample room for ink – the pen body has a large circumference inside the pen. The virtue of the first approach is that if it fails, I would still be able to use the pen as a c/c filler.
Neither approach is viable right now for the simple fact that I know of nothing that would serve as a suitable shelac for the first option, nor do I know of anything that would be adequate filler for the second option.
What do you folks think: Is this a bad idea in general? Should I be happy using the pens as c/c fillers? Or is there a substance that you know of that would be suitable for either of the two options I have outlined? (It would have to not be affected – that is, degraded, etc. – by the ink, of course.)
