Our new Student Nib Smoothing Kit includes our regular Basic Kit (1.0-micron and 0.3-micron abrasive films and a 1" square piece of 0.002" shim brass for flossing nib slits and feed fissures) and adds two Autopoint "Big Cat" pens for you to practice with. These inexpensive cartridge/converter pens are 5-7/32" capped and 6-11/32" posted, and they're surprisingly nice pens. They were made in Germany and have high-quality Mutschler steel nibs. (You might actually have to rough them up a little before learning to smooth them.) The photo here shows a blue pen; the kit contains one blue and one black pen. Each pen includes one cartridge and can also accept a standard International converter (not included).

I do not tune or adjust these pens as I do with our regular new pens! These are for you to tune, and they are virgin pens. If you're good at this, you might end up carrying one of these pens for knockabout use; they're that good.

The price of the Student kit is $15.00. The Basic Kit remains at $8.00.

Yes, and yes.

Well I said I wasn't going to buy anymore pens or inks for awhile and although this kit does contain a couple of pens... that doesn't really count, right? I'll just keep telling myself that until it arrives rolleyes.gif .

Hi there.

Crazy question: do these kits come with instructions??? I've got a pen or two that I've wanted to try smoothing the nibs, but (to be honest) I wouldn't even know what to do with all of the equipment if I had it!

Thanks.

Just wanted to say I got this kit and WOW...what a difference the right tools make.

I've been wanting to try my hand a grinding a stub nib, but didn't want to ruin any of my good pens.
Figured I didn't have any thing to loose using one of the kit pens.

I studied articles from Wim (Wim Geeraet's (wimg) article ) and Ludwig Tan's site then gave it a try.

Much to my suprise and delight, I was really pleased with the result. These results boosing my confidience, I tried turning my bold, Lamy Studio into a stub. Again, I'm really pleased ! The Lamy just glides across the page! clap1.gif

I tried this one other time with only marginal results. That attempt left the nib "toothy", felt like I was writing on 1500 grit sandpaper. crybaby.gif

I'm convinced the real key here is the micro abrasive films Richard is selling. thumbup.gif

No affiliation, just a happy customer.

I'd also add this article as a good resource...
