Full Version: Problem with PR America Blue

I recently got a bottle of this and have tried it in a couple of pens that are normally pretty nice writers. I love the colour of it, but it flows so freely the nibs flood. Has anyone else had a similar problem with this ink ? Would it be a totally counterproductive thing to try thickening it a bit with some KY Jelly ??

Hi Tim,

I'm using it now in a Yard O Led fine nib pen, and in a Pencraft Herald medium nib pen. I haven't had any problems like you describe so far. I think the PR Plum is definitely more leaky!

It works perfectly in my Parker 51...maybe you got a bad bottle, it is usually a good ink, I would not try thickening it with anything, you masy jam up your pen, I would take it back to the supplier and swap if for asomething else...

I was going to say the same thing (well except the last part). It's been a perfect flowing ink out of every pen I've tried. I've got a few pens that are finnicky with otherwise perfectly good inks, it could be just a bad match for some random reason. Of course since you've tried it with more than one pen, the chances of that are increasingly lower. (Erm...increasingly lower? You know what I mean!) rolleyes.gif

I wish my local supplier would take inks back. Once out the door, they're 100% my problem, even if defective or I find sludge/slime in the bottle. Since you said you've had the same problem with more than one pen, I'm betting on bad ink. If your local supplier is like mine and won't take a return, PR will take care of you if you contact them and describe the problem.

You might try cutting it with a little water. I believe that American Blue has quite a bit of wetting agent in it.

I would not add any water soluble lubricant or thickening agent to it. They tend to lead to unexpected consequences in fountain pens.

Modern maximumly saturated (with dye) inks are tricky beasts where the manufacture has to make many adjustments to get them to work in "most" fountain pen. (There are reasons why traditional inks are not heavily as saturated with aniline dye.) If you want to have a particular ink were with a specific fountain pen, sometimes you have to fiddle.

Good luck
