Full Version: Sailor 1911: Classic vs. Standard

Following the poll I ran at Penpedia, I am starting work on expanding the Pen Profiles area. First on my list is the Sailor 1911. I could use some clarification (you are welcome to add the information yourself if you like, or pass it to me) on what the difference between classic and standard 1911s is. I know there is a large and medium sized pen, are those equivalent to classic and standard, or are there large and medium versions of classic/standard pens. As I have decoded it, the classic is a larger pen than the standard, which is the difference.

The same goes for the "International" style mentioned at nibs.com. Is that just a case of confused nomenclature, as I can't find information about it anywhere? It looks like a standard 1911 to me.

Here's the growing profile page for the 1911: http://www.penpedia.com/w/index.php?title=Sailor_1911

I'd also love to get some user pics of the pen if anyone out there has some nice ones they would like to donate.

Thanks for taking this on. This has the potential to become an excellent resource for fountain pen enthusiasts!

If this helps any, here's a link to an FPN post I made last year regarding some issues re Sailor. Some of the information may be out of date (for instance, I have heard that 1911Ms are now available in black, although I do not have any), but I believe the information was accurate at the time it was written.

THAT is a great post. I will work on getting all that information cut into the wiki article today.

I'll tell you what, if nothing else, I am certainly learning a ton as I research the articles. I think maybe it's about time for a contest for the top contributors to encourage others, because while fun and educational, there's a lot out there for me to compile all by my lonesome. smile.gif I just worry that what I post is not 100% accurate, so getting more people reviewing facts and such will be a great help.

Hello,

I just won a 1911 on eBay puddle.gif It's a yellow and black one with the zoom nib. I read the article at penpedia, but there were no mention of it. Starting to wonder if I bought a Franken pen... blink.gif

Kind regards,
Karl

Since you asked for pics, here are a few:

This was sold as the International by J Mottishaw. I specifically ordered this one because I wanted the White Rhodium and Black, and the regular 1911 was only avail in black and gold.

I hope this is helpful, I like the idea of having the reference that you are working on thumbup.gif

Quicksilver-

The Togi nib that comes on the "classic" 1911 is a 21k nib, and it comes as a medium fine and a medium.
Keep up the good work-

That, I'm not sure on. The way some of the information read, you could have had a colored body with black end caps, but to have the whole cap black with a colored body? I haven't seen an example of that anyway. That's one to defer to the better Sailor experts here.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it (on both parts!). I added in your nice pic of the pen with the ink bottles.

Thanks for catching that typo. Sometimes it's just no good proofreading your own work when you've spent a good chunk of the day typing already.

I've got a 1911M in black with gold trim, but I bought it from a guy who lives in Singapore. I presume there are Asian-market only at the moment.

As an avid Sailor collector I can offer this....

1911 standard = 1911M = 1911 profit
1911 Large = 1911

In some instances the word "Profit" is being used to describe all of Sailors current production line of 1911, but I believe it was intended for the smaller 1911M. I cannot however verify this.

Classic = Older USA model that has the anchor on the top or a cap that has one ring of trim instead of two. Having the anchor does not make the pen any differnt in size other than the slightly shorter length of the missing point to allow for surface area to mount the anchor.

Sailor occasionally does special runs such as this one which just happens to be my Holy Grail of pens.

Nibs within a given pen size seem to all be interchangeable, excluding the occasional fluke where the feed is of abnormal size.

Within the silver line, the one sold as the Naginata Togi has the silver grip section where as the standard has a black grip section. The stock pen with the silver grip section comes with a slightly longer barrel, but all parts interchangeable, and as of the last I was able to find out, can be ordered that way.
