Full Version: crack in Reform pen

I got a very pretty pen yesterday. It is marked Reform on the clip and the bands at the base of the cap. The band also indicates it was made in Germany. When I got it, the filler system was not working properly. A little soaking in warm water soon remedied that situation. Today, I got some Sherwood Green Private Reserve Ink from Paradise Pens. When I filled the pen, I noticed I was not able to wipe clean the area around the base of the nib. Repeated efforts met with the same result, more ink. Closer inspection revealed very small, longitudinal cracks where the nib inserts into the barrel of the pen. As near as I can tell there are three of them. Obviously, they are not very big or I would have noticed them previously. Still, they are big enough to let ink leak out. Is there any way to fix them, or is this the death kneel for this pen? Any information would be appreciated.

P.S. I tried to photograph them. They are too small to see in a photo even using my camera's macro feature.

I've fixed some very small cracks with epoxy and vacuum. Apply epoxy to 'crack', vacuum part, release vacuum, wipe excess epoxy, let cure.

If you can find the proper solvent for the barrel material it will be the easiest/best way.

Thanks for the reply. The epoxy is no problem. I have that. I do not know how I could vacuum it into the cracks, though. As far as the solvent goes, I have no idea what to use.

I should state I do not use 'hobby' epoxy. I use MAS; WEST and System3 epoxies. These are all slow curing, low viscosity epoxies.

The plastic will dictate the type solvent needed if a solvent is used.

I'm bringing this back to the top in the hope that others have additional input.
