I dropped my brand new Phileas that I just received in the mail on Wednesday. I was handing it (against my better judgment) to someone to write their email address down (he didn't have a pen and I forgot to carry the ballpoint that I bring for just such an occasion) and while passing it to him he didn't get a good grip and it fell to the sidewalk.

Oh My God!!! Can you imagine how difficult it was for me to continue carrying on this conversation? To listen to him prattle on about God knows what when all I really wanted to do was scream and call him a flippin idiot!!!

It has sustained some very minor damage that's only noticable if you're looking for something and for all intents and purposes is a non-issue but it jumps out at me. I see it, I know it's there and boy am I (whoa there)!!!

I only paid $20.00 for it but that's beside the point. Its new and I like it!!!

Oh well.

Sorry to hear about it. Doesn't matter that it was only 20 bucks - it was new & you liked it!
I can relate. I had a chili pepper trinket I got for free(when I bought etchings at an art shop). I promptly lost it (actually forgot to pack it) & now I miss it.
It's not a pen but it's sort of similar... unsure.gif

Dude this sucks. About a week after I bought a 51 I was snatching it out of someone's hand and the pen went flying through the air landing nib down on my desk. Doh!

I was perusing the aisles in staples earlier today and they had a black with gt phileas. Were they not selling them for $20.00 more than pens n more I might've purchased it.

Ouch! sad.gif I loved my first Phileas -- the thought of any pen being marred (don't ask me about the fingernail polish remover used on the Pilot 78-G barrel headsmack.gif ) is painful, but I especially sympathize with your mishap because your Phileas still had that "wonderful new pen" glow for you. Glad it survived the fall so well, though.

My Dad gave me a Montblanc Meiesterstuck ball point that he had in his junk drawer. He had no idea it was an expensive pen and no idea where he got it from. It has nail polish on it. Seems like someone tried to seal a crack with it.

Question folks,

At the risk of sounding dumb and making it even more obvious that im a newbie....

How do you pronounce Phileas? You see, I've never read Around the World in 80 Days.

So is it like Fill-eas or Phi as in Alpha Phi Alpha?
Ernst Bitterman
Much the same as Philadelphia.

Thank you Mr. Bitterman. Much appreciated.

I assume that the "minor damage" was not to the nib? So, file the ding out of the pen, go through umpteen many different grades of abrasive, apply a couple of coats of carnauba, and treasure your now-personalized Phileas. Your pen has a scar from when it did battle with a twerp.

Just a tiny nick to the clip and another at the bottom end of the pen. It was capped when it fell (thank God). I'm probably overreacting but it's brand new so it bothers me. "Did battle with a twerp". I like that.

AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!... I truly know how you feel, Nightwriter.

I am very sorry to "read of your new Fountain pen misfortune".

"Let me tell you one of my Fountain Pen stories...
This event happened in the eigthties, I had recently brought a "new
Waterman Fountain pen". A fellow approach me on the street needing a pen
to write an urgent message. I lend him my "Waterman Phileas", he wrote his
note, thanked me and went about his way. I clipped my pen to my pocket
but when it was time to write with it was severely damage, he had applied
excessive force and the nib's point was distorted and bend. I had favored
that particular nib and very disappointed with this situation."

I had other fountains to write with so I retired the Waterman until
last year. I decided to repair it wearing magnifying glasses and a micro-
needle nose plifers. The pen writes "very well" today!

Nightwriter, what is the moral of my story?
Carry another pen for others to use and the nib of a fountain will mold
itself to your writing style, don't let other's use it.

Best wishes,
Richard Preston

Sorry about your pen, mate. I will drop a cheap pen on the carpet in your honour.

I moved this topic to the Waterman forum as it's primarily about a Waterman pen. There may be interest there and additional comments, since the Waterman forum users may not venture to the Sheaffer forum.

As NightWriter posted it here obviously as a follow-up to another thread, I left the thread here so Sheaffer users can still find it.

Cheers,

I have dropped my Phileas on the point of the nib several times, did some half-arsed unkinking and general ham-handed tweaking, and (while it looks a little like Hans Conried's nose) it still writes wonderfully. I would get a second one, but I'm afraid that the old one would get insulted ("What, you don't trust me?") and stop working. While it can't be used as a weapon, or jack up my car, like a Rotring 600, it seems to be pretty durable.

Nightrider,
What color is the Phileas your ' friend' dropped ?

Sorry. I realized my error after the fact.

There there, Nightwriter!!

A blue-marble Phileas is a beautiful thing. A pity that happened to it. But so long as it works, I don't think you have to worry.
GBM
I don't see this thread being about ' a Waterman' pen.... I think that is just the vehicle for talking about 1. Clumsy friends 2. Why one should not loan ( even allow them to touch ) your prized pen ( or any fragile item ). He told us what brand pen it was.... but that was really not generic to the story..... Our sympathies would be exactly the same had he omitted the brand name.... Greg

Nightrider,
Was it a fine, med, or broad point ? Do you think the Green Marbled Phileas are equally desirable ? Did it have a converter?

Its a medium nib. Love the green. Was a hard choice between the two but they're so inexpensive I'll get around to getting a green one. No converter. Got the $19.99 special on Ebay. Just the Waterman case and a black cartridge.
