At the time this was produced (more than 20 years ago) this was considered to be an important job, and as I was still at that time, only a part-time calligrapher, I was delighted to get the commission. It's a long time ago, but I do remember enjoying the experience although I was very tense. Later, I was able to use high-profile work of this nature in my portfolio, and it helped a great deal in establishing myself when I eventually became full-time.

It's nice coming back to FPN after a few months and finding Caliken is outdoing even himself wink.gif

As always brilliant lettering and a nice balanced layout. I love that 3-dimensional L. Did you draw the L in and paint with gouache?

Welcome back, Ged - you've been missed!

I posted a topic "A small lettering sample" some time ago. To avoid repeating myself, can I direct you there, where the construction of this type of shadow majuscule is discussed?

Thanks for the comments

As always, jaw-dropping.
I'm curious, as you look at your 20 year old work, do you admire it or criticise it? Many musician/artists/actors can't appreciate their older works.
I am not a number
That is quite scarily brilliant!

Thanks Lloyd - that's an interesting question. I think that the honest answer is - neither admire nor criticise.

By the time I wrote this in 1986, although still part-time, I had been actively involved in learning and producing calligraphy for around 30 years, and had reached the point where I wasn't going to see much improvement or further development.

I think that this probably compares well enough with anything I've done since, and I'm happy with it.
This is probably as good as it is going to get, for me.

On the other hand, since joining FPN last March, I've learned to appreciate fountain pens and am in the process of trying to improve my handwriting, which is great fun.

Wait... did you say trying to IMPROVE your handwriting? This looks pretty good to me! I've been devoting some time since graduation to trying to improve my chicken scratch... if it gets half as good as yours I'll be thrilled!

Thanks for pointing out the earlier post regarding the construction of the capital, it's over here if anyone else is interested.

That's clever! How did you manage to produce the links to my previous posts? I'd really like to know, as it could be very useful, some day.

When you're adding a reply/writing a new post, there's a little icon above the text box that looks like a green arrow with a plus sign.

You'll get two pop up boxes after clicking the insert link icon, the first is for the URL to the link eg http://www.yahoo.com. The second pop up is for the 'title'. The title is actually just the words you want to appear underlined, like the words "text box" earlier in this post.

Thanks Ged - I've printed it off and pinned it on the wall above my computer.

Also, if you first highlight the words you want linked, then hit the link button, the link will be created using those words. In other words if you write "text box" and select that text, then hit the link button, you just need to enter the URL and "text box" will be underlined and hyperlinked in your post. The link will open in a new window by default instead of replacing your current window.

FPN has great software, IMO.
