Full Version: We keep reviewing it because you need one too. Lamy 2000

Review Summary:

A design easily considered gorgeous (especially, I imagine, by you 51 crazies), a comfortable pen made of an interesting material yet remaining understated. One of the cheaper gold nibs around today, and what a nib it is; smooth and soft, can give you line variation when you need it and always makes you breakfast in the morning. Piston fill and holds a significant amount, especially when you have the (German width) XF nib. Has been around for awhile and when discontinued will definitely be sought out with much fervor.

Let us begin with a few beefcake shots:

And we move to the written review:

Detail shot with Noodler's Red-Black, in an Apica notebook:

And finally, a detail of the pen filled with Pelikan Black (above) and Aurora Black (below) on a Rhodia pad:

A few more images written with the pen are in my Red-Black review; http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...mp;#entry464045

Well done, Will.

Good job on that review, enjoyed it. Liked the topic title too! I don't know how badly I need a 2000 wink.gif but I certainly like reading how others see the same pen.

I've really never been drawn to the Lamy 2000 before, but now that I know it will make me breakfast in the morning, how can I resist? roflmho.gif

Today I've got my second Lamy 2000. This time it's a F nib (the previous one was EF). Maybe I was lucky, since the nibs are just a bit on the broad side; my Duofold orange international with a F nib lays a broader line than my 2000.

I also love my Studio and AlStar. I don't know why I didn't start using Lamys before.

A great review and its welcome because the 2000 really is a modern but classic design. You are lucky because you seem to have no inkflow problems. Not so with my XF using namiki black. I am going to try another ink type before I take the drastic action of removing the section to get at the nib guts. I hate to do that because of the sknny threads holding the section to the barrel. Still, once I get the section off I am sure I can fix the problem.

A thought about the design is that the clip end of the pen has a small polished cap top that sort of resembles a derby. If you hold it in profile there is a small gap between it and the cap making it look like a pen with a hat. Or, I have been staring at this pen too long.

Best Regards

jonro
Thanks for the review. My Lamy 2000 (also with an XF nib) is one of my favorite pens. It's a great all around performer.

I never liked the 2000 until I got a great deal on one. FORCING me to buy it.

I love it. I use it every day!

A pen with a hat? Definitely staring too long.

So Lamy does still make pens with gold nibs. Too bad the Accent with the "palladium" finish and comfortable, rubber grip apparently doesn't come with a gold nib. I don't care much for the "brilliant" finish, which to me is more brilliant for looks than for writing.

My XF Lamy 2000 will be coming soon along with a single Lamy case and two bottles of Aurora, both blue and black! I'm quite excited...I've been looking at it for a while now...

Great review and pics, nice work! ;-)

Hello WillSW,

thank you for the review! A few days ago I bought this wonderful pen, following the Lamy Studio pearlwhite. They told me, there is a Lamy pistonfiller and I couldn't resist. I got it with a M nib and it's exactly the broad nib I was looking for. I am using it with MB Seasons Greetings ink. Best possible ink flow, intense cimarron smelling wonderful deep brown colour. I like it very much - some post-christmas-pleasure!
The friends I have with me 'til next sunday get lessons about fountainpen writing and seem to be more and more infected with the virus. Lamy 2000 did it!
My wonderful Pelikans, MBs, even my best loved Soenneckens are weeping and crying because of neglection crybaby.gif

Loving Lamy pens for more than 20 years I wonder why I missed this wonderful writing instrument 'til today: finally I got it headsmack.gif

Have a good day,

Will, thank you for a nice review of a nice pen (it's a workhorse frequently in my pocket).
And most of all thanks for your "souvenir" of Italo Calvino. He is one of my preferred authors of the XX° century, definetly the best Italian along with Buzzati.

I suggest to whoever is interested to get a copy of his "American Lessons - Six Memos for the Next Millenium". The last year of his life he was invited by some US university as external professor. He came up with six lessons on what we should preserve of the literature of the XX° for the second millennium.

The values saved by Calvino were:
- lightness
- rapidity
- exactitude
- visibility
- diversity
- coherence

Regards and thanks,

stop-it-stop-it-stop-it!!! Lamy 2000 is on my short-list of next pens,
but either I await the next windfall (parents bearing presents?) or I promised I'd reward myself after I publish my first first-author scientific paper (currently working on it)... or someone might beat me over the head with one for $70???

Nevertheless, I ask:
can the Makrolon really develop a patina? (or were you referring to the brushed-steel in the section?)

I haven't heard of many people having their L2000's modified into italics... Anyone care to share their modifications (since an edged nib is also on my short-list)?

Has a weird pen ever been more handsome? Why aren't there more pens like this one?

Well, maybe not a patina, but Mr. Richard Connor at Penspotters swears, absolutely SWEARS (mentions) that he's seen well-used 2000's which look like they're made of a fine dark wood. He also calls the 2000 the "anti-Montblanc", an accurate and likable term. I like to call it my "other Black Pen".

Guess what! Martin Luther King wants you to buy a Lamy! How convenient. You need more impetus with which to write those lovely color sheets of yours.

Really enjoyed reading your review (and I love the titles of the 3 parts of the handwritten review: "Initial Impression", "Becoming Friends" laugh.gif and "Conclusion")---thanks so much, Will! clap1.gif

Not much I can add to what other have said about the Lamy 2000 (I have one myself). It's a modern classic, that's for sure.
