Full Version: Monograms on Vintage Pens

I've only got one vintage pen that's been monogrammed, a Pelikan 140 that I found in a junk market, that has a Korean name on it. I googled it in the hope that I'd find some reference to the individual - maybe I'd be able to contact him. But nothing turned up. Do most people try and do this? Have you ever had any luck with finding out about someone, even meeting them, from a monogram?

Sure do look up names. I do a lot of genealogical research anyway,so I have the tools available.
The census records at ancestry.com are great. So are the Social Security Death Indexes.
I have a Waterman engraved Emil Pfleger. Looked him up in the census and turns out he worked at the factory.
Kinda neat. I know others have pens that turned out to be from more interesting people. Award and presentation pens, etc.

I have the obligitory Black Esterbrook J with Bell Systems on it (I think they made a bazillion of them) plus a Black Esterbrook LJ with "Birdie Brown" on it. Someones name but I couldn't pass it up. I found this link and this link. There were others but the name seemed to be popular in the mid-west

I recently purcahsed a Esterbrook J with "D.C Byrer Co. Mortgage Loans" on it which I discussed in the Esterbrook forum. If I do a Google or Yahoo search, my post in said forum is about all that pops up.

I have a Bell Esterbrook too. My favorite monograms are "Toots Cooper" on a litle black Tuckaway and "Helen Hunt" on a early 30's Balance. I don't think "Helen Hunt" the actress used it, but there was a "Helen Hunt" on IMDB that was makeup or wardrobe in the 30's. Fun to think about.

Yah just gotta love someone named "Toots"!

Well I certainly do; that is my 86-year-old mother's nickname. Her lifelong friends (sadly, not too many of them remain) all know her by that; those who have known her less than 40 years do not.

Hahah, Toots, that's adorable! smile.gif

Do her grandchildren call her Tootie?

My current restoration-project was once owned by a V Grieves. No idea who Mr./Mrs Grieves was...

No, since my father passed away, the only family members who call her Toots are a few of my cousins who never knew her as anything but "Aunt Toots".
