Is there a way to test the archival qualities of paper? IE: how do you check the pH of paper?

I was thinking that perhaps if you were to blend the paper and soak it in water then check the pH of the water you might get some idea of which way the pH was leaning.

The FPN user Kadymae might be able to help you out with this question but I haven't seen her around for a few days--probably the holidays. Maybe she'll jump in here.
