Some long time back some of us had a chat about this, and the techniques involved.

I have a copy of some of Bill Jones' notes from the early 60's on the subject which appeared in the Bulletin of the Society of Ornamental Turners, and later in Bill's first book.

Bill has kindly given me permission to pass these on, so if anyone out there - hopefully not thousands rolleyes.gif - want I can email a copy in .pdf format. 4 pages, comes in around 612k.

Please pop "Threading" in the subject line of emails.

Thanks. Good reading.

Cheers.

Here are a couple of pics of some of my own chasers - might give a better idea (the smaller set are 36tpi):

and the armrest the round bar was just the nearest thing at the time biggrin.gif just threaded the end for the nut. Rolls nicely across the tool rest

I think I'm up to date, but if anyone didn't get their copy, please send me a PM with your mail address & I'll get it out to you.

Happy turning,
Ruaidhrí

Probably also should have mentioned that if you cut the top couple of inches off they can also be held in your normal toolpost.
Handy for caps & barrels.
Put a 36 tpi chaser in the toolpost, set gear train for 9 tpi and you'll get a quick & cheerful 4-start thread.
Either turn yer pulley by hand or get ready to slap in the clutch, it's a bit quick even on backgear for the lengths we'd be using biggrin.gif
