Some time ago someone was looking for pictures of the Buddhist series I posted. Unfortunately, I needed the bandwidth for other puposes and took them down. Below are a few pictures of the four Buddhist pens plus two similar. The sutra printed on the pens is the Hannya Sutra. Pilot chose the Custom model as the platform for this group of pen. the Custom series was made from 1972 to about 1981 and included twenty plus (and counting) designs. Some ofthe more common are the black striped stainless, sterling cisele, maple, and plain black. They are mostly found with FINE nibs with EF, MEDIUM, and BROAD less common. When first introduced, some had smaller inlaid nibs which included MUSIC and SIGNATURE types.

From right to left, as shown in the first picture:

Polished sterling with engraved characters.
Etched (am not sure if this is the correct term) design on sterling creating raised characters.
Black urushi lacquer over hyomon makie characters.
Red urushi lacquer over hyomon makie characters.

Pilot made other models as special orders with the same techniques. I include the other two in my collection.

Etched sterling with Chinese (not Japanese) characters related to medicine. Signed by artist.
Red urushi lacquer 'Song of Human Revolution' for Sokagakkai, the worlds largest Buddhist organization.

There must be others and the hunt continues..................................

Thanks, informative post, great pictures. I've got these, or at least one of them anyway, high on my priority list of "To Gets". Beautiful.

It is great to see them all together Stan, thanks for posting the pics. Weren't these also available in sets with BP and MP? There was a Sterling Custom on Yahoo.jp not long ago with a set of cufflinks and a tie clip. The ultimate accessories for your Custom pen... maybe they made some scriptures cufflinks?

Happy holidays!

Regarding whether the Buddhist pens came with mechanical pens nd ballpoint pens, I am only 100% certain the etched models did. I do recall that the hyomon makie madels did but, that part of my memory is uncertain. Am collecting the MPs and BPs to complete the collection. To my surprise these are proving incredibly elusive. Unless someone really wanted a Pilot Custom BP or FP, they were more than likely sold with sets and broken up.

Of the other models, the sterling surely did come in sets, as did the maple and plastic models. I do not recall ever seeing the striped models with companion BPs and MPs; a point I consider of great interest.

I've had several of the sterling cisele models for sale with the matching tie clasp and cuff links. Always thought this an odd combination until Miki (my better half) explained that cuff links were commonly worn by executives in Japan. Must have made a heck of a gift set. As companions to the other models, I've never heard of any cuff links being made.

Generally speaking the sterling engraved character, and red and black hyomon makie models go for around $600 in newish condition. The sterling raised character model being the easiest to locate and the black makie the hardest. Adjust pricing accordingly. The engraved silver model goes for about $1000. Other custom models go for less, depending on design and desirability. My pen with raised Chinese characters related to medicine might only fetch a decent amount to a doctor. The Sokagakkai pen is worth little in Japan except to members of that organization. Both should be worth more here.

Stan! I love your new Avatar. I assume it is from Kurosawa's movie "Kagemusha"? or "Shadow Warrior". I love that movie. sorry for the OT, but folks should check it out. Criterion DVDs.

In addition to the Pilot Custom pens with the Buddhist Scriptures, Pilot also made a Delux model with the Scriptures. These Delux scriptures pens are much harder to find...any one else have one? Perhaps in another color? I sure would like to see one.
