Full Version: Which model Mont Blanc?

I purchased this pen new in the late eighties, perhaps early nineties. It uses a cartridge and is 139mm long capped, 120mm long uncapped, 12mm at its widest point. The only marking on the nib is "Mont Blanc". The nib is golden, though it may not be gold, maybe plated. The pen is very light, the nib is either fine or extra fine. It is not a very good writer, quite scratchy and somewhat dry.

It looks like the one in this thread: http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...showtopic=45883 ....

Thank you Maja, looks like it is a MB 420.

Yep, looks like yet another 420, these things have been popping up quite a bit lately. As for your flow and scratchy nib, I would ship it off to Greg Minuskin to have it fixed. Fantastic work, extremely fast turnaround, fair rates.

If it's Montblanc, I'm pretty sure the nib would be gold.

That being the case, it would probably be a good idea to have some work done on the nib. Because of it's poor performance I never use it. I do recall the nib to be quite flexible. Anyone has an idea of its value? I completely forgot the purchase price.

Thanks Allan, I might just give him a try. I already have two pens out for repairs but not with Greg Minuskin.

My guess on the value would be somewhere in the $100-$125 range, maybe a bit less with the scratchy nib and flow problem.

I recently took in a similar pen on consignment, but the cap band identifies it as a 220. Mine is piston-filled and appears to be made of Makralon - it is the same finish and texture (and weight) as a Lamy 2000. The nib on mine is stamped "585" - the composition of 14K gold. It writes with a medium line and appears somewhat stubby, both in the shape of the nib and the line it produces. It's actually a very nice pen and I've been using it for myself to get familiar with it before it goes on the block. It's only flaw is the little snowflake on the barrel end has disappeared. The one on the cap remains and is very white still.

Have you had yours repaired yet? Does it write any better?

I have not used it at all. I don't know if I should sell it or keep it. It's the only pen I have with a flexible nib and I would like to be able to use it but the performance is simply too poor and I find no enjoyment in using it. I alreay have two pens under repair. Perhaps I'll send it in after my other pens come back from the repair shop.
