Full Version: Inexpensive Pens in NYC?

I'm sorry if this is somewhere on here, but I couldn't find it in a half-decent search. I'm in NYC until Saturday mid-afternoon and was wondering if there are any places worth visiting, and only if I could get a decent inexpensive (under $~25-30) fountain pen there. If there's already a thread mentioning this, I'd love to be led in that direction! Thanks!

There aren't too many fountain pens available in that price range, but you can try Fountain Pen Hospital on 10 Warren Street, across from City Hall. If your travels take you through Grand Central Terminal or the Port Authority bus terminal, you can go to the Joon store there.

Isn't Art Brown also in NYC?

My friend told me this little junky store in Chinatown sells them. I imagine they're pretty cheap, but I bought 5 fountain pens under $20 each from isellpens the other week, so there have to be some el cheapos out there (Lamy Safari, and Pilot 7somethingG I think). I didn't get to try them yet, because I'm not where I had them get shipped to. Maybe I'll go check out the place in Chinatown and see how junky they really are. Not that I'd be able to tell.

I haven't been to Chinatown in a while. You never know what you might find there. If you don't find any fountain pens, you can still take time for a great lunch.

I'm not sure how these prices are, but I found this place in Chinatown called Pearl Paint. They had Pelikan Pelikanos for $15.xx and Pelikan Futures for $20.xx. I don't know if these are bargains. Oh, and I also save 10% for being a student. I got some Pelikan inks and I didn't know if the Sheaffer ink was for calligraphy or if it didn't matter. I'm going back in the morning if I figure out that I should give any of these a try. Some of the colors were nice-looking for the Sheaffer. The brilliant black was $6.39 and the the Brown was $5.69. Minus 10%.

It's worth a trip to midtown to go to Art Brown. It's on west 46th street between 5th and 6th avenue. They have a huge selection of inks. You won't find any knockoffs or fakes like you might in chinatown but they do have a few lower end pens in their large selection of pens. Even some under ten, ie reflex or vector etc.

Sadly, I'm only free between now and noon, and then I'm going to bagel brunch and then leaving the city. I should have looked into this earlier. I'm going to try to see if I can get to Altman Luggage, too, though. Thanks for the tip, though.
Garageboy
Altman Luggage has an MB 149 Tom Sachs for $450 (when I asked)

Oh my. Well I absolutely love my $5 one I got from isellpens last week. I like it better than my Lamy Safari and my Pilot $10 ones. It's great.
