Hello All,

I am awaiting eagerly a new Amber Sheaffer Javelin (will today be the day?) and have been reading through the posts on converting this pen to an ED fill. I have a few questions about what I've read thusfar, questions to keep a newbie from dumping ink all over himself or runing a brand new pen (or office carpet!). Based on what I've read, I'm going to outline what I would to to convert this pen in a step by step fashion. If I get it wrong, please let me know.

1. Remove the section from the barrel,

2. Apply sealer to the rings of the section (I will use silicon grease (ie. CPU Goo)),

3. Fill the barrel with ink, approx. 90% full,

4. Reattach to section to the barrel,

5. Write for a really long time!

Using the silicon grease will make refils quick, right? I shouldn't have to heat or force the barrel off like I would with contact cement or shellac, correct?

Thank you in advance for helping me with this project,

Joe

On that particular pen, Joe, I didn't even have to use silicone grease on the barrel threads. It was completely ink tight without it. Certainly won't hurt to use it, however.

Hi,

Use some of the silicone grease at http://tryphon.it/catalogo.htm.

Do not use anything less than that purity.

Silicone grease will make refilling easy. Just remember to apply a little more every time you refill.

You could also use the Trypon section sealant which is a little more "seal-ly" blink.gif than silicone, but is not an adhesive and doesnt require heat to remove.

True, but IME it is quite a bit more difficult to unscrew the section with that stuff on it. Also, it is a dark amber in color which may or may not be a factor depending upon the pen (transparent, and if so, what color - in this case, not likely an issue). It is great stuff, though! I have the section sealant and the grease - both from Tryphon! biggrin.gif (usual disclaimer)

Hi Joe,

What you said in your original post about the steps needed to do a simple ED conversion with a Sheaffer Javelin fountain pen sounds right.

In case anyone else is interested in the original FPN thread about this discussion, you can read about it here:

Joe,

I finally got around to buying some silicone grease from Pendemonium last week. I was shocked at how easy an ED conversion is to do. I used a 1960s-era translucent turquoise Sheaffer Cartridge Pen I got from Ann Finley over the summer that I filled with Noodlers Navajo Turquoise and a red translucent Javelin that I filled with Waterman's Havana Brown.

I filled up the barrels using an old hypodermic needle last used for refilling Apple printer cartridges. About 2 ccs of ink does the trick. I smeared a little silicone grease on the threads, tightened them up and starting writing. Simple, quick, easy and effective. Who could ask for more?

Although you could do it with an opaque barrel, I think it works and looks better with a translucent barrel, particularly if you use an ink color that matches the barrel. You can see the ink level and it intensifies the barrel color.

Given the amount of grease Pendemonium gives you for the price and how little is needed for an ED conversion, you'll have enough to do dozens of pens.

There's no reason not to try EDs, particularly if you have cheap plastic barreled pens like the Sheaffer cartridge pens in your collection (and doesn't everyone?).
