I am looking for a pen as a gift for a left handed writer. He rotates the pen so that it is clockwise, facing in the direction of his writing. I am assuming it is a right-foot (or right) oblique that I am looking for. Is this correct? Also, does anyone know of any inexpensive (<$40) which can be found with a stock right-oblique nib? Thanks.

First of all, I commend you on your gift idea. But I'm afraid choosing a nib isn't quite that simple. Which nib will work depends very much on how he holds the pen. Many lefties used right-footed obliques, but I'm a lefty who, for italics, prefers a left-footed oblique. For a standard round nib, I use a regular ole' nib - no oblique at all - and many lefties do the same. If he already has an FP, see what he's using. If not, get him to try one of yours as a curiosity and see if it works. Really hard to say without trying it and still surprising him.

Southpaw, it's my brother, and he does have a fountain pen, which I have seen him using. He doesn't get very good ink flow because he positions the nib in the direction of the lines on the paper, almost completely horizontaly. This has discouraged him from using fps, so I wanted to find a pen which he could get good results from.

By reputation, it would seem Richard Binder is the guy who might be able to assist most readily. I almost wonder if an Arabic/Hebrew Italic nib wouldn't be best if he truly is turning the pen a full 90 degrees from straight up and down.

I very much doubt you are going to find an oblique nibbed pen for that price..
The least expensive I would recommend would be a Pelikan 200 with a Binder oblique nib... that is going to set you back about $100.00
But at least you know it is going to be a fantastic writer...
I would also talk to Richard about the nib... he makes that nib in both 15 and 30 degree... so I would think that makes a difference...
As for the problem you brother is having.... It might be the pen itself and not the way he is holding it...
Ask Richard, his wife is a lefty and he has lots of experiance with left handed customers....

I really want to stay away from the nibmeisters though, no offense to anyone, but I just don't want to make this a big project. I am not looking to spend a lot of money, I just want to find a stock oblique nib. I'm sure if I could find a regular oblique that he could make a compromise. Thanks for the suggestion, but I really don't want to take that road. If anyone could recommend a pen stock oblique nib, (I'm assuming a right-foot oblique for a lefty) that would be great. I'm looking for one that is fairly cheap (<40). Thanks

Perhaps a better option would be a stub? As I understand it, a stub is very rounded and so therefore there wouldn't be anything on the nib to catch the paper and cause scratchyness? I imagine something comes stock with a stub for a relatively cheap price.

Stock right oblique are rather rare to come by AFAIK. Pendemonium offers some grounded nibs pen under $40. Perhaps you cah enquire if they can grind one to right oblique for the same price.
