Full Version: My first Aurora

I've been wanting an Aurora for a while (make that months and months), and finally treated myself to an Aurora Fuoco (from Pam Braun). I purchased an F nib (after waffling between EF and F--Pam even tested both for me and reported back that the F was smoother in her estimation) so I went for the F. Besides the gorgeous look of the pen (a glorious red, perfect for the holidays), the nib is a treat. Worked wonderfully right out of the box. And I love the feel of it as I write (now I know what others have meant by the Aurora nib's feedback).

My first experience with an Aurora means there'll definitely be another in my future.

Congratulations Coco, and happy birthday!

Which ink did you use? Just in case, Aurora inks are also excellent.

Congrats on getting a great pen, Coco.

I love Auroras, and the Fuoco is especially beautiful. I would really like to try a Fine Aurora nib someday as I've only used Mediums and wider. I'm glad to hear it writes well for you.

Enjoy!

Really nice pen, coco. The pen is eye popping with that red. I know you'll enjoy using it. Congrats.

I've never tried an Aurora nib myself, I'm missing something they tell me. I do have the small 88 but I don't think you can even come close to comparing the two size nibs.

You have a great birthday present, coco. Happy Birthday, and congrats on the pen.

I hope you find the feedback from the nib pleasant. I liken the nib's feedback to the suspension in a car. My Corvette is an older (1977) model that has a great suspension system, but it is not like the modern ones that distance the driver almost completely from the reality of the road. There is enough contact with the road that the feedback allows me to feel more like I am genuinely driving a car. I feel somewhat the same way about nib feedback. I feel like I am "writing," and enjoying the sensual pleasure of the action.

You might become one of the resident experts on Aurora's F nibs. I have one B nib on my Sole LE, but otherwise I have all M italic nibs on my Auroras. To say I am fond of Aurora's italic nibs is an understatement.

Congrats Coco!!!

Congratulations on the gorgeous pen. I also have the Fuoco and I love it. I did not know what it meant when people spoke of "feedback" but like you, I now know! I have the Ipsilon Deluxe in turtle brown and that one is very nice as well! smile.gif

Congrats on the Aurora. I got an Optima from Pam a month or so ago with a fine nib. It's my favorite pen. It writes like a dream and the aurolide is beautiful. I like the feedback from the nib a lot. I know what you mean about buying another. I hope to come across a Stilo Fetti some day- I saw a couple for sale when I first became interested in FPs but wasn't ready for an Aurora at that time.

Looked up a photo just now - very nice looking pen. I will have to try an Aurora someday; I don't own any Italian pens yet.

Frank, have you ever tried a broad or italic Pelikan? I have a steel-nib M200 medium-italic and I'm almost ready to order a custom medium-italic M600. I noticed that Aurora makes an italic pen that's about the size of an M600. If you've tried both, what do you think? Thanks!

Thanks for the positive comments. Loved the comparison of Aurora's nib to a vintage Corvette. I once wrote a story with a vintage Corvette and I researched that car down to the door knobs.

Alejandro, I first filled it with Levenger Cardinal (a gift sample from an FPN friend). As for Aurora inks, I've never tried any (on To-Do list).

Happy Holidays everyone, coco

Happy birthday & congrats on the exquisite pen!

Congrats! The Aurora Ipsilon Turtle is my wishlist.

Looking again at the Aurora Ipsilon Deluxe, I see that it's cartridge/converter-filled. Do they not make any piston-filled pens?

The large size 88 is a piston filler, I believe. I want one, but I'll probably get an Ipsilon Deluxe, first.

The Optima is a piston filler, too. It's been on my wanted list for a while, but so far I haven't been able to bring myself to spend that much for a pen. My price ceiling has been inching up though.

I hadn't looked at the 88, but it looks nice. At Fountain Pen Hospital, though, it comes only with silver (not gold) trim, and I've already gone through my nib preferences with Jonathan at Nibs.com. So, I'm pretty sure I'll get the 600 with an italic nib. Eventually, I might love to get a Montblanc with an italic nib--my parents each have a Montblanc and they seem very well made. (Theirs are ball-points, though, since they got them when they had to do a lot of carbon copies.)

Hello,
all Optima, Optima mini (and also the fuoco and the sole mini), the big Version of the 88 and all limiteds are piston fillers.
At aurorapens.it you can download the catalogues.

With advice from Jim at Bertram's Inkwell in Baltimore, I recently bought an Aurora Optima.

After a 90-minute journey to get there, I told him that I wanted a new pen. Comfort and ease of writing were the sole specifications (and I did not mention price). He laid a half-dozen pens on the counter and I kept trying them with medium and fine nibs, and some pens would be removed and some would be added as I tested. I ignored appearance and brand. At the end of an hour or so, two Aurora Optimas, one with medium nib and the other fine, remained on the counter. It was really tough, but I finally chose the medium. (Besides, nibs seem to be like jeans, the sizes vary among brands, and vary within brands, too!) A few days later, I was fretting about my nib choice, and returned to the shop and I tried the very same two nibs again, back and forth. I was reassured I made the right choice.

The Aurora Optima is a wonderful pen to use, and is apparently much easier to work on than the Montblanc 149 that I had in my pocket. I can tell you that I much prefer writing with the Optima than my 149, so much so that the the latter was shipped to MB service for a fine nib, just so that I would have reason to continue to use it.
