I'm looking for the dimensions of the Esterbrook Dollar and J Series fountain pens. I've looked at various sites, including yours Brian, but haven't been able to find anything. I'd appreciate some one directing me to an authoratative source. Thanks.

Double Jewel Esterbrooks came in three sizes: J (full size), LJ (slender), and SJ (demi)

The J and LJ are the same length at 5 inches long.
The SJ is shorter and is about 4.75 inches long.

The J cap measures 1/2 inch in diameter.
The LJ and SJ cap (same cap) measures 7/16 inch in diameter.

Some data on the Dollar pens is here. The model designations get a bit messy but essentially there are two common sizes.

Larger diameter pens at 7/16" barrel and 1/2" cap. (4 11/16" long)
Smaller diameter pens at 3/8" barrel and 7/16" cap. (4 3/8" long)

If I think of it later tonight, I'll look and see if I have any other sizes.

Brian will be able to give proper model designations to the Dollar pens, I'll just mess them up but there are B, H, and A for sure.

I really need to put sizes up on my website. headsmack.gif

Dollar pens come in three sizes just like the J series, essentially a full size, slender and demi, or more correct, B, A, and H (not to be confused with later H pastel pens). Dimensions are such that the B (J) and A (LJ) are the same length, and A (LJ) and H (SJ) are the same slender diameter.

J pens will have a larger cap jewel, whereas LJ and SJ (along with a J barrel) will use the same size jewels.

Dollar pens can be identified by also looking at the top of the cap. If there is significant space before the E and after the K in Esterbrook, it's a B, if not, one of the others. There's a good picture in the thread Todd mentions.

Then there's the possibility of a golf sized dollar pen, the likes of which Paul Hoban talks about. I have a golf sized pencil which is ultra short at just a hair under four inches, but perhaps that's a discussion for another day. The exception rather than the rule, as it where. smile.gif

You've hit on the nub of my problem: I have a J double jewel, a J transitional and a Dollar Pen, which I think are all full-size, but how do I know for sure?

use the sizes in farmboy's post, and the comparisons in brian's.

Most transitionals in the wild seem to be full size J's. If all your pens are the same diameter, and the cap jewel on the double jewel J is larger than the barrel end jewel, you probably have a J, a J tran, and a B.
