John,
Thanks for sharing these! I'm just an amateur, but I do enjoy looking at things like this.
I think you've done a pretty good job picking backgrounds with colors that contrast with the pens, thus making the pens stand out better. (a side note though: the last photo has a blue reflection that runs into the pen a little, but that's not an issue with the background itself.) The gold fixtures of pen #2 run into the background slightly, but overall it's not bad, especially on the upper aspect of the cap band where there's enough shadow to separate the two, and I really like the blue against the gold. Your light control is pretty good, and if you continue to improve that even more, you'll be able to avoid certain problems and give yourself even more options.
I like that the background in #1 creates a frame around the pen and helps guide the eye to specific points of interest--a nice effect!
I think if you're going to have large words under an item, you should stick to the way you've done it with #2 and #4 where you can see some of the beginning and some of the end of the words. In #3 you can't see the end of the word and that plays a mind trick that I don't like. (this is just my interpretation, maybe no one else will agree).
Overall it looks like you've got some nice backgrounds to work with, and some very nice pens too!

Even though the Keats is the busiest book cover, it think it looks the best!

I have some nice books to use as backgrounds, but am wondering if any are too distracting? Let me know what you think!
Maybe 2 might be a little busy but depending on the pen atop it might not make a difference. Maybe having the pen up on an angle might help so it is away from the cover.

Oh, an angle might help some. I don't really have any type of lighting setup. This was just done with a desk lamp and the flash. I'm looking at getting a light-tent for better light dispersion. I also didn't really mess with white-balance, so there's probably some stray colors in there that shouldn't be there. I was just trying to get a feel for backgrounds so that I can focus on the photos and not have to worry about if a background is too distracting or not. Thanks for the input!

I like #1 the best. Like Stephen said, nice framing effect.

I think they all look beautiful. You don't see amazing covers like this anymore...
