I've heard that Conway Stewart is issuing a vermeil version of the Sir Francis Drake. Does anyone know if it is on the market yet and, if so, who is selling it?

Pam Braun is your best bet. You'll get a good price from her.

I considered buying this pen, but the price is far higher than a standard sterling Drake. I don't believe the gold plate justifies the extra cost - it would probably be cheaper to buy the standard Drake and have it professionally gold plated!

Hi Charlie!
The Vermeil Drake is a stunner and I love that the vermeil front section and solid gold colour nib follows through with the gold colour theme.

CharlieB,
Dont know if this would be of interest to you but I will be shortly selling a C.S. Westminster Vermeil.
It was new in Dec 06 and was never used. A month ago Mary Burke assisted me (she is a diamond in helping with C.S. related issues) in getting the original M nib exchanged for a med italic nib which has signed a couple of documents then put away.
The pen is totally as new.
I think its retail in $ was around the $2800 mark. In the U.K. it was £1500.
When I come to sell this I would accept well under half of its original retail.
Please let me know if this would be of interest to you.
I will trade up or down in value.
Regards,
Ian.

I do have an extra set of Classic CP4 but they are in Sheaffer boxes rather than Classic Pen packaging. They do have matched numbers. I may have a sterling Parker Duofold I would trade. It is the one with the plastic trim.

I would agree that it's stunning, but it's also a lot more expensive. How thick is the gold plating, in microns? Thanks.

The gold is probably HGE which is about .0001 inch. Gold over sterling is much better than over other metals because of it's porosity.

maryburke@conwaystewart.co.ukI hate to mention this, but can you guarantee that Conway Stewart will be around in 100 years time - or even 25 years for that matter?
There are a lot of generous guarantees for many products out there (damp courses, double glazing etc., etc.) but if the company goes bust or just ceases to trade in the meantime, what happens then?
Just curious.

'Bumping' means posting thread replies designed purely to keep a particular thread at the top of the list, so that it gets more attention.

Another pen that might be considered as an alternative to the CS Drake Vermeil, is the Onoto Excel in vermeil. Similar size to the Drake.

With all due respect, it's a pretty absurd question! Nobody can guarantee that anything will be around in 25 or 100 years' time. When you buy a car, do you expect to use it for 25 years?

There is nothing absurd about the warranty. An ounce of common sense should be enough to realize that implicit in the warranty statement is the assumption the the warranty will be honored "so long as the company is around." That seems pretty obvious to me. Even for a 90 day warranty, there is no guaranty the company will be around for 90 days to honor it

It will honor
if it is still around, whether the warranty is 90 days or 100 years.

That says everying about those who are also mentally impaired enough to fall for such blatently stupid advertising claims -which also just makes the new Conway Stewart company a joke. I have a really cheap pen I can sell you for $2,000 (or £1,000) and I will give you a 200 year guarantee. (Mind you I'm prepared to admit the pen is only worth $10 - how much is a modern CS really worth?)

No, these are not stupid claims, because the guarantee is fully valid. However, what you are saying is
extremely stupid. If you buy a car with a 5 year warranty and the car company goes bust beforehand, that is just bad luck. It's the same with a pen company. It's very unlikely that a highly reputable company like CS will go bust, but it can happen. You
cannot have product warranties that outlast the life of the production company - it's the same with any product you buy.

Thanks for all the helpful information in response to my questions. In fact, all my questions were fully answered. You folks are are a fountain of information (no pun intended).
Too bad I had to wade through a bunch of Conway Stewart-bashing to find the information I was looking for. What is it about this website that attracts the "bashers"? In the last few days, I've endured Montblanc bashers, Montegrappa bashers, Krone bashers, Conway Stewart bashers, and eBay shipping cost bashers. My advice to the bashers is: if you don't like a product or service, don't buy it....but don't try to ruin everyone else's experience with the product or service by bashing it continually on Fountain Pen Network!
