Full Version: Another Sheaffer Nib ?

Good Morning All,
I have a very nice Autograph Balance.
It has a different nib than any of the other Sheaffers' I have.
If the picture isn't so great... it has no serial # yet under the "Sheaffer's" it reads "____ 79 ____"

It is a very broad wet line.
Is this a standard designation for "Broad" or can anyone explain the "79"

Thank you
Steve

Where have all the Sheaffer experts gone?

I am not an expert, but it looks like a Triumph nib. Pen Hero is a good resource. It looks like it may be a TouchDown filler.

Hi Mike
Thanks. I have already been to Pen hero.
It's a VacFill with the fountainbel crtridge system restoration.

I see the same nib on the page you sent me to. I'm wondering
if there is any info re: the "79" that's on the nib.
Thanks again
Steve

Steve,
I am not sure. I got my first nice Shaeffers about three weeks ago and cruised the Pen hero site to discover what they were.

Maybe Richard Binder's site may shed some light.

First, note that the pen is not a Balance; though collectors may stretch that term a bit to include pens that are of essentially the same style as those Sheaffer called 'Balance', I would say that the post-War models with the innerspring clip are not considered members of that family.

The '79' represents the code number for the nib style (not the tip style, but the type/shape/size of the nib as a whole). Other nib style symbols of the day include 59 (a shorter Triumph nib) and 33 (a smallish open nib). it seems that not all nibs had their style numbers stamped on them.

Thank you Daniel.

What would this pen be called?

These pens had model numbers which were the price paid. I'm guessing yours is a "1250". You can look at the imprint with a magnifier and see if that is correct.

Not so. The model number of this pen is likely C94W. The model numbers typically encoded the color, style, and filling system. "1250" is not a model number; it's just the price.

There is no Price Code on the Pen.

Thanks Daniel.
