Full Version: Scratchy M150

I have just bought a Pelikan M150 black, brand new. I have filled it with sepia (red-brown) ink (from the italian firm "Pierluigi - Roma"), bought some days ago with the pen. Sadly the ink flow is not constant and writing is not as smooth as I have imagined. Suspending writing for a few seconds is enogh to have the nib dried. Moreover the sign looks fine though the nib is M size.
What's the problem with my pen? Bad ink? Bad nib?
Best regards. to you all.

First thing to check - is the nib in snug. Don't over tighten but if it's slightly loose you could get bad flow. While scratchy Pelikan nibs are fairly common, inconsistent flow is not typical.

Second, do the ol' rinse with a mild water and hadn dishwashing liquid mix. Flush with clean water. Refill. Test.

I'm not familiar with the ink so don't know if that could be a problem.

I'd agree with KCat - when I first got my M150, it was a wee bit scratchy and skipped occasionally, but I never had a problem with the flow.

After doing what she suggests, I'd also try a different ink, one flows well - the one I use is Waterman's Blue (because it's cheap and handy for me...).

After that....I don't know! I'm sure others will have suggestions though.

(FWIW - after a few months of writing the M150 stopped skipping and is very smooth - I love it).

Following your suggestions I have solved my problem.
After washing nib and barrel, I have filled the M150 with Montblanc black ink (the one I use with my Le grand 146) and now the flow is OK and the nib does not feel scratchy.
Thank you very much.

Glad it was a simple solution. Some pens just like certain inks. And some inks, while okay in certain pens, can be stingy and not lubricate well. I'm not familiar with the Italian ink you used. Wonder if it's just too "dry" for that particular pen?
