My wife stopped by one of our favorite antique/junk shops the other day. She called me to see if I wanted to buy a discolored jade flattop for $10.00. I've always liked the flattop models and have a couple of nice jade models. She said it was in good shape (except for the color - she's no fp expert but recognized the discoloration so I knew it would be bad) and the nib had a "funny bend" to it. We talked about it a bit and I told her to buy it - I figured it had to have at least 10 bucks worth of parts.
When I saw it for the first time today, I was once more amazed at how discolored the jade plastic can get. The barrel end is stamped "F" - I"m assuming that denotes the plastic manufacturer. When I rinsed the nib to take a look there was some nice purple ink in the pen and when I wrote with it I was surprised. It appears to be a factory stub nib. The "funny bend" is actually an optical illusion as the bottom of the nib is flat and the top has been ground down in a flat shape. It is a nice broad stub nib that writes with good line variation.
That's a treat for sure!
