I have a several different MB 146's from the 80's and 90's. One recently acquired is unique and different from all the others. The unique pen does not have a serial number on the clip band. It only has the word Germany, and the lettering style and location are radically different than on other MB 146's...
"Germany" is deeply stamped and on the backside of the clip band (i.e.- opposite the clip)
All other pens have either "W. Germany" or "Germany" very lightly etched on the clip band next to the top of the clip, and the serial number lightly etched on the other side of the clip.

I've heard there was a year where no S/N appeared on MB pens and I think it was 1991(?)
Does anyone out there know if MB also changed the style of their lettering for that same year that they decided to omit S/N? The lettering on the Meisterstuck band and clip band are different enough that I am concerned aboutt this pen's authenticity. Calling MB USA has been fruitless so I thought I'd ask here before shipping pen out to them and wasting $20 on shipping both ways.

thx,

Hi Leonardo,

You've just given a very good description of a 146 with a medium nib that I've had since I bought it new. My memory may be getting fuzzy, but I seem to remember buying it in '90 or '91. The use of "Germany" rather than "W. Germany" would lead me to believe that I bought it shortly after reunification. This pen was one of the first I bought, purchasing it at a stationers in Burlington, MA. While I no longer have the original box it came in, I remember that the package included a case and a bottle of Montblanc ink. I'm not an expert, and I don't know the circumstances of your pen, but I'd say that you can be pretty well assured that what you have is the genuine article.

Like you. I would be interested to know how many years that pens of this particular configuration were produced.

Mont Blanc introduced serial numbers sometime in 1991; earlier pens don't have them.

If you can supply some close-up pictures of the pen, including clips, bands, engraved words and the nib, we can make an educated guess as to its authenticity, but having it looked at in person by someone who knows the brand is much better.

John & Joel - Thanks for your answers. I found a local collector that has helped me out and he said it falls in the '90-'91 era and is legit. PHEW! rolleyes.gif
