Full Version: Help Chronologically Placing a Waterman #3

I've got two Waterman #3 fountain pens. I know this because on the bottom of each is stamped the single number "3". Both clips are silver in color and have a ball on the end of them. The black/silver/red one has "Waterman" engraved on it sideways and has two rivets attaching the clip. The green/brown one has "WATERMAN" engraved vertically and has no rivets attaching the clip.

I know photos would help, but I don't have them right now. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Michael

Edited to stop the "wise" comments about "dating" a Waterman. wink.gif

Couldn't help you with dating a Waterman. I had enough trouble with women. roflmho.gif

I am not sure about these, as they fall after the HR era and I loose interest in Waterman about then, but I think they were from the 30s-40s(?). Waterman was late to the celluloid game as they bought a hard-rubber factory just before celluloid would sweep the pen market (which is why they developed all of those cool ripple colors to keep pace). I am pretty sure the #3 was one of their early celluloid models, however, and that the #3 nib was basically a #2 nib renamed.

I am sure someone here could tell you a whole lot more.

I think Waterman #3 is from 1935 - at least the gray/black pearl with red flecks is listed as such in one book...

I was thinking 30s-40s, so that seems about right. Thanks for the info thus far and please feel free to add more.

But I think I also saw it in a 1934 Waterman booklet. See the Vintage Waterman Catalog thread in this forum - there's a link to repros of brochures and catalogs.

I have a Waterman's no. 5 (black plastic/not HBR), and one of the "color" nibs (brown). I date it after 1927 to mid 1930s.
