Hi,
Newbie here.
Have been a regular visitor to the FPN.
Have blown a couple months pay on pens.(Ouch)
Bought some expensive pens(expensive for me).....but have fallen in love with a comparatively inexpensive pen...the Sheaffer No Nonsense.
While browsing FPN and a couple of other pen sites I found that the 1920's Sheaffer's 3-25 and a few examples of the lifetime model are quite similar in looks to the No Nonsense.
Would anyone care to throw some light if these models are related in any way?

Fateh

If I recall the 1920s 3-25 is a flat top model (I think they had a 3-25 Balance model as well at some point). The No Nonsense is a retro style pen- it's made to fill in the modern cartridge or converter method (cartridge being quite popular) that captures the simple look of the 1920s Flat Top pens. The 3-25 being a true original Flat Top model, the No Nonsense does look similar to it- but really because the No Nonsense is a modern "re-make", "interpretation", "re-visit" etc. The 1920s pens would be the original ones.

Hello there,
As Ray-Vigo points out, the NoNonsense pen (I share your affection for it - it's a great writer) was indeed a remake of, or an homage to, the classic Sheaffer flattop pens of the 1920s. So yes, it is most definitely related to these earlier models.
Some of the NoNonsense variants feature design elements that are explicitly intended to exploit that kinship. One good example is the chasing on the NoNonsense "Old Timer" - a reference to the chasing patterns on old BHR Sheaffers.
There are other Sheaffers whose styling evokes the flattops: the "For the Guy" and "For the Doll" pens (1960s/70s?) and the Connaisseur (1980s/90s). In the case of the former, the styling is almost a direct copy; in the case of the latter, the flattop serves more as inspiration than as model. The Connaisseur is a significantly more expensive pen.
So there are a lot of other Sheaffer options out there, vintage and otherwise, for the collector who admires the NoNonsense.
Good luck!

Interesting- does anyone have a picture of the "For the Guy" pen?
I like the No Nonsense as well- I like the old-style looks and the simplicity. The No Nonsense and the Waterman Phileas are the two pens who are perfect for someone who wants a modern fill, old style looks, and pen cheap enough to carry around with them that won't worry them with thoughts of the inability of replacement if lost.

I love the flat top style- but those colors are downright awful for that type of pen!

Well, the darker orange is actually a color with a Sheaffer pedigree (or at least a Sheaffer precedent). It's not very different from Sheaffer's 1920s orange ("Rubic") Radite...the stuff that's always being described by sellers as red hard rubber.
As for the color palette generally...to paraphrase the writer Leslie Poles Hartley: “The 70s are a foreign country; they do things differently there.”
Cheers,
Jon

Have a look at eBay Item number: 330185494390. There was a red on up this last night, too-- the trick is to just search through "Sheaffer Fountain Pen" and plod along until you see what you're after.
