Full Version: Thin Japanese papers?

I have in front of me some materials from an application packet for a Japanese university. Several of the smaller forms are printed on a somewhat thin, very smooth, very "crisp" paper. It is a neutral white, neither slightly off-white nor bright. It holds printed and written ink very well, no feathering, little show-through. Some of the printed type and lines in tables are VERY fine and they come out very clearly. It takes a crease very nicely.

I'd love to have some paper like this, but I have no idea whatsoever where to look for something like this. I've been very into fountain pens for a while now, but have only just recently started paying much attention to papers outside of vellums and marker paper (I'm a designer). Any thoughts?

It may not be precisely what you're seeking, but the paper in Apica notebooks (also Japanese) is thin, crisp, exceedingly smooth, and excellent for fountain pens. You can buy them from Take Note Writing Gear (no affiliation). Unfortunately, it's already lined and bound into notebooks. But something of the sort must be available in blank sheets.

Well, while I would like to have something like this in sheet form, I'll take it in notebook form to start! I just love the smooth texture and crisp feel of it.

OK, just ordered two of the notebooks. I'll try them when I'm done with my current Miquelrius (which I am getting very tired of) and I'll report back on them at that time.

I got two APICA notebooks in the mail yesterday and they are very nice. They are soft-bound, so maybe not the best for writing without some sort of hard surface at hand, but the paper is excellent. I'll review them fully when I finish the Miquelrius (the notebook that refuses to run out of empty pages) I'm writing in now.

As a bit of quick follow-up, the Apica notebook is turning out to be a distinct winner. They're made of 100% recycled paper, are easy on the eye, and are a joy to write in. They are distinctly unassuming in appearance, reminding me in ways of the old black-and-white-covered composition books, but with just enough Engrish thrown in to elicit a grin. The paper itself is smooth, pleasing to the touch, and it behaves well with both ink and graphite. No feathering or show-through worth reporting. For a chronic thinker like myself, this might be the perfect notebook. I can write, scribble, or carefully draw at will and it all seems well-placed in this notebook. I only wish they were harcover, but oh well. If nothing else, I can eventually just go back to lab notebooks!
