A fantastic perk of working on the FPN ink project is that sometimes I get a sample of ink in development from Nathan. This otherworldly orange ink came along for the ride with the last FPN ink samples. I fell in love with it instantly, and I asked Nathan for permission to do a review, even though it’s not in production yet. When I first received it, he wasn’t sure if it would be made, but since then he says it will be! I'll let the distributors/merchants introduce the name.
I have a feeling that this will be a love it or hate it ink. I adore it! Are you old enough to remember Tincture of Mercurichrome that mom put on cuts and scrapes?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merbromin This is the color of the ink. Even the napkin that I used to wipe off the nib after filling reminds me of the swabs used on my childhood boo boos. When my Orange VP saw it, it threw a tantrum until I filled it with this ink.
The ink dries very quickly on Ampad Gold Fibre and Hammermill Copy Plus paper. There is a marked bleed through to the other side of the Gold Fibre, a little less so on the Hammermill. Dry time on FPN notepad, Rhodia pad, and Clairfontaine pad is quite long, but there is no bleed through at all. There is no shading on this ink. The color is consistent no mater what pen/nib I’ve used.
I don’t think I’d use it for writing in a journal, except perhaps to emphasize something. I do use it jotting things down, to-do lists, shopping lists, little notes to people. If you want to get someone’s attention, this is the ink to use! Did I say it was bright?

That color is fantastic! In the scan it appears to be a very bright coral - would that be accurate?
Nonetheless, this one may have to go on my list.

Check the link in my original post. The color of the mercurichrome on that page is spot on for the ink. I'm not great with colors so I don't know how to compare it to bright coral. Except for the bright part

Thanks for the review, it's a great color. It actually appears to be "scarlet" to me--a bright red leaning to orange which does resemble mercurochrome. And I'm a "Scarlet Knight" (Rutgers Univ. graduate) so I've seen a lot of scarlet!

That is really intense. It reminds me of the carmine ink pads used in Japan for seal imprints.
Is it bulletproof, near bulletproof, or regular (for Noodlers) ink?

Ack - Mercurichrome!
I have nightmares; my parents used it on me all the time and swore it didn't hurt. Well it hurt me!
I only found out recently (last month) that I have a strong sensitivity to that family of mercurial products (thimerosal, etc.).
Please, no more, make it go away.
(Otherwise, without the association, I would consider it novel and interesting.)

Elaine:
interesting that the link indicates that it was taken off the market as ineffective and unsafe in 1998. Another example of the remedies our parents used on us that were useless at best and possibly dangerous at worst!!

There's a whole group (being too lazy to look it up) that is trying to get the FDA to reverse their decision.

Look for it sometime in the next week or two. I don't know exactly who will be selling it, but it will be available to all the merchants that sell Noodler's. (No, that doesn't include FPN, we just sell FPN exclusives)

Cayenne is a nice muted orange. Very warm. The new orange is flaming.

Yes, and how you'd blow and blow while it was being applied so it wouldn't hurt as much (not).
I love this ink. I've been wanting a big, bright orange but nothing has come close (to my eye). Thanks for the review.

Is this ink Noodler's Dragon's Napalm? I found it for sale on eBay here:

That ink is a pretty color, IMO - I'd consider using it for stand-out passages, in lieu of Fox Red.

I just ordered a bottle, plus a couple more. I liked the color from the first; if it were also eel, polar, bulletproof.
I have been away from fountain pens for a long time and am getting back. I have recently purchased numerous new pens and wanted something different than my normal black and blue. I also ordered red, violet, purple (I'm color blind).

In the past, I've looked across the spectrum of inks for this kind of orange and failed to find it. Habanero was close but not as bright as I wanted. This one goes on the list (after Ellis Island).
It does look just like mercurochrome to me. That stuff hurt me too when it was put on wounds when I was a kid, and it really made me mad when they'd say it was not going to hurt. I didn't mind the hurt but lying to me really ticked me off. I remember it like yesterday.

Can't find this ink, still, at our regular online retailers, so I'm wondering if the Dragon ink is the one Nathan sent to Elaine, since I believe she indicated that they would be carrying it. But the name of the ink would sort of fit what she said... I'll be interested to see what members say about the characteristics of this ink, too.

Yes, Dragon is the ink I reviewed. Nathan indicated to me that the usual retailers would have it at some point. I hope so because my sample is running low!
