My thanks for helping me find flexible Wahl nibs on e-Bay

On January 24, I posted a message in this forum (Post #218944) asking which Wahl nibs might be most flexible. I was seeking nibs for sketching. Syd answered by posting two pages from an early Wahl catalog that showed pictures of all the nibs with brief descriptions of "the uses for each of the Wahl Pen nib styles." It was especially helpful that the pages were in color, so I printed them out and used them to identify pens on e-Bay that might have the flexible nibs I was looking for.

By June I had found the four pens shown below. I also read all of the other posts on the Wahl-Eversharp forum and thought you might be interested in just how helpful this information can be for a newcomer. The pens I found are far from perfect because I needed pens I could keep in a field pack for outdoor sketching. I was specifically looking for less expensive pens with chips and scratches or missing clips, but with great nibs. And I found them, thanks to a couple of pages from an old catalog. And aren't they pretty? Chips, scratches and missing clips really don't matter when the nibs are so wonderful and are for everyday use.

Many thanks to this forum for all your great information,
Pat v.

Hey Pat,
Thanks for the nice post! It has always been a mystery to me that pen folks are not all aware of the wonderful writing characteristics of Wahl nibs. And thanks too for pointing out that the Wahl-Eversharp forum has served a valuable purpose for you as a resource. That is the whole idea afterall.

I am glad that the post on Wahl nibs was useful to you in your search for not so perfect pens with good writing souls. The pens you show look pretty nice though, and you can always replace a missing clip. You are among the few who recognize what value there are out there in that category, especially if penmanship is your highest priority in owning a pen. The writing samples look great. What variation in line! That's what flex is supposed to mean!

Please post here often! We would love to hear more about your finds.

Wahl's do have some great nibs, and are one of the few North American makers where one seems to find more flex nibs pens then many of the others, at least in my experience. I don't know if there's any reason for that?

Pat,
Nice pens and even better nibs! I'd post a few samples myself but my hand writing would frighten the French! On the other hand if you are ever looking for another flex nib Wahl pen I may have a descent one up for sale soon.

patv - thanks for posting your nib information. I just got my grandad's old Wahl Eversharp pen with a #4 nib so now I have an idea of how it will write once the sac is replaced. Great flex! I have another Wahl pen (rosewood hard rubber) that Syd fixed for me, and it's one of my favorite writers. I'm now officially on the prowl for other Wahl's.

Wow nice samples of handwriting. I love my Wahl Flex nib! I have a Black and Pearl Gold seal with a very stiff fine nib but my Lapis Gold seal has a wonderful flexy nib!

Title of the original post: Why are some Wahl nibs engraved in italic? Which might be more flexible?

Best wishes,
Pat
