First I'll start by saying no pens were harmed that were repairable. Several weeks ago I was cleaning out the "51" parts box. Things went into two piles, beyond repair and usable. The beyond repair pile included a number of barrels with cracks or fatal damage, a bunch of damaged filler parts, and broken collectors, among other items. The box sat around for a few days as I couldn't bring myself to toss the stuff out. Then it hit me -- I have a machine shop at work, so I'll make a demonstrator. A few hours later I had come up with a nice way to show off Parker's feat of engineering.

Here we have a filler in the relaxed state. I've opened the diaphragm to show the pellet pocket. I had to shellac the sac in to keep it from slipping of the ferrule -- this shouldn't be necessary in a rebuild. Also note that the diaphragm doesn't go beyond the ridge of the ferrule.

Here we have the filler in the extended state ready to slurp in a load of ink. Note that the filler tube is cut to be below the end of the extended filler.

Next up will be a cut-away of the collector end, I just need a pen beyond repair to work with...

What a great idea, and thanks for posting these pics. They offer a great view of the inner workings of a pen that I've often wanted to see just such a cross section of.

Thanks a lot! I was just reading the Parker "51" book last night and this is quite helpful.

Sorry to go off at a tangent. But you may find this vaguely amusing.

A while back I was asked, for an approvals document on an explosives transport container, to provide an exploded view of the box. My boss was speechless when I asked how many fragments he wanted illustrated, and the size of the crater.

Regards

Richard.
