I am an avid Sheaffer collector and absolutely love their inlaid nib designs. My favorite, by far, is the beautiful and sturdy Legacy, of which I have one classic black and gold Legacy I. Over the past few years however, I have had to send it in for various reasons such as the touchdown cap threads stripping and leaking inside the barrel upon filling.

The last time I sent it in (for the touchdown malfunction) I was a little worried they would write me back to tell me that I was just out of luck, that my pen was so old (made in 1995) they could no longer work on it, or that they would have to replace it with a Legacy Heritage (the Legacy with NO touchdown filler). To my surprise, the pen came back...fixed....with a repair tag, listing that it has been worked-on for the filling mechanism.

But, I began to notice things such as the "M" to indicate a medium nib (which has long rubbed off on my pen) was mysteriously there again. The section ring was a little different than it was before, and there were no more tiny abraision marks on any of the gold trim. They had replaced my Legacy I with a mint pen...with the better clip ring design! I was amazed that Sheaffer still had these NOS pens lying around for just such a purpose. My pride in my pen has just doubled, and my confidence in Sheaffer has reached a zenith. For those of you who are afraid of sending a Sheaffer pen in for repair because they might not be able to fix YOUR pen and end up sending you some alternative model....perhaps you will be in luck as I was!

....enjoying a new pen....

Wonderful story, Robert and seems similar to others that I've heard about Shaeffer.

It is tough seeing Ft. Madison being foresaken for distant shores. The only positive aspect is that if you are young enough you may live to see the U.S. again become a manufacturing nation. What with the labor rates in the countries getting all the manufacturing business already reaching equality and more with U.S. rates, the pendulum may start back with the U.S. labor market becoming attractive again. unsure.gif Time will tell.

Robert,

Great story. I got a Cobalt Glow off of PT a while back and it came with a broad nib. I got the Glow at a really good price, NIB, but with one problem - the white dot was messed up. I prefer fines, so I sent it to Sheaffer for a nib swap. Recently, I was reading Kendall's thread on fixing a white dot and asked a question about fixing the one on my Glow. I went to look at the white dot and, lo and behold, it was perfect! Sheaffer had fixed it and not even mentioned it (or charged for it) biggrin.gif and I hadn't even realized it blink.gif .

Great folks at Sheaffer. Makes me want to buy more. Time to contact Penhero. cool.gif.
