Hi. I'm looking for ebonite suppliers who sell more than black!

I have searched on web and find ebonite maker but they only offer black ebonite.

But I would really like if my pen is made out of red ripple.

Or not just black at least

if you have info about source of colored ebnite plz share! bunny01.gif

All that's available is black, red/black, and green/black.

You can get it from Pipemakers Emporium.

There is a German company that is working on ebonite in a myriad of colors, but they are still in development.

The company I searched also trying to make other than black. I actually saw the sample including brown, sky blue, and so on. (I forgot)

But I mailed the company later and heard they are not ready. Still developing...

Thanks for the info

Do a google search and insert "ebonite.it". They manufacture ebonite that is sold both in blocks and rod form. Gianluca may reply and offer some pricing and colours that they offer from Italy. Prices are decent but M.O.Q.'s and shipping may be a deterrent. Good luck.

didn't bowling balls used to be made from it? So you could slice up a bowling balls and make a mess of pens blanks, right? ;P

I've heard of people doing that.

I think that there's an article at the IAP explaining how to do this.

However, cutting a sphere on a big bandsaw is no easy feat. You need to build a jig, etc...

But yes, it can be done

The actual thickness of the hard rubber is about a quarter inch, so there is not that much in one. Most of the ball is other stuff.

Go to the rod section, and then at the bottom of the page, there's a small hyperlink at the bottom for "more".

This will get you to page two of the rod stock.

yu_bh
Nope. It doesnt appear on page 2 either.

I had to mail for order mine.

Hi,
here is a link to available ebonite colors.
Look at the colors for one, and at the two patterns - the striped ones and the irregular pattern shown below.
this Hard rubber is made in Germany. I can help with an eventual order, problem is, that their minimum order would be around 1500 Dollars.

Here is the link: http://www.abruzzo.de/ebonite.htm

Best regards

For $1500, I'm sad they don't have more color. Still, I hope that enough people can go in on enough ebonite to make it worthwhile. smile.gif

Still the 1-meter rod length seems like it might be convenient.

Well,
I have seen their production, and its hard to believe, how difficult it is to get a new color.
A brilliant coral red, as it was made in the 20ies - canīt be done any more, as the formerly used anorganic colors
full of lead, cadmium ecc ecc are not allowed any more.
And the organic colors needed to render the ebonite a non toxic product are mostly being destroyed during the vulcanization process.
They lovingly react with sulphur at some 100 degrees celsius and high pressure.

This is what keeps color range so restricted.

Well, I've seen modern ebonites in more shades, though not optimized for pens. However, I'm not sure how different the demands of a musical instrument body are.

For example, here's a purple clarinet with an ebonite body.

Note also the other dark colors available in ebonite (that'd be the picture without the obnoxious yellow one).
Deirdre
Also, this company offers quite a few shades of ebonite. 31 to be precise. None of them happen to be sufficiently purple, though.

Interesting interview here.

These colored clarinets are made of ABS, not ebonite, despite the description.

Good to know, thanks.

Also, it occurred to me that the German company making ebonite seemed to be making solid colors, not ripple. I'd still love to see 'em made into something, but they wouldn't be quite as pretty.
