Hi All,

Check out the new sterling Roaring 20s Legacy - MSRP $975.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Sheaffer-Legacy-Roarin...1QQcmdZViewItem

Very hard to get a sense of what the engraving looks like in person. But for those who thought they'd seen the last of the Sheaffer barrel imprint with the two large S's...well, here it is again (sort of).

Two points:

1. The Chrysler Building gets in strictly on a technicality - completed in 1929, but opened to the public in 1930.

2. No disrespect intended, but I can't help saying it: mightn't this theme have been better executed on a revival of the Connaisseur - a pen inspired by the designs of the decade depicted here?

Oh, and Jim...no heads-up for your fellow FPNers? wink.gif

Cheers,

Jon

Dear Jon,

Actually, we announced the pen earlier in the summer in the Marketplace. We have to be careful not to make potentially commercial announcements here as I'm one of the moderators.

It's a really cool pen, BTW.

Having said I don't like metal bodies pens (on the Pelikan forum about the M7000), I suddenly remember my small collection of Legacys (but I suppose most have laquer finishes).

Whilst I love the overall look of this pen (I love the Legacy shape), it has a little too much engraving for my traditional/spartan tastes.

I am also disappointed that Sheaffer no longer use the 'touchdown' system as they did on the Legacy I & II (I know it wasn't quite like the real thing, but I liked it). In the circumstances I will probably stick with my current Legacys (at least at this price).

Hi,

Jim, please accept my apologies. Not sure how I managed to miss the announcement in the Marketplace...I must be slipping.

The more I look at the pen - and there's a lot there to admire - the more I think that the stylistic dissonance between the era evoked by the engraved images, on the one hand, and the era evoked by the pen's overall design, on the other, is a problem. The 20s were a memorable decade for Sheaffer, so it makes sense to explore this theme. But the 1950s PFM design, to my eye, is fundamentally at odds with that theme.

Sheaffer had great pen designs during the 1920s. Why not marry the design and the theme? To commemorate the 20s era on a 1950s-style pen is like commemorating 1950s automotive history by placing depictions of 1950s cars on a 1980s vehicle. It's just odd.

A Roaring-20s Connaisseur? Absolutely. Or, alternatively, a Fabulous-50s Legacy, with thematic engravings/colors that evoke that decade? Positively.

Oh well...don't get me wrong. Between this new Legacy and the possible Targa revival, I'm glad to see what seems to be a genuine desire to embrace and celebrate the brand's heritage (no pun intended). I may cavil at a particular design choice, but I'm delighted there are new Sheaffers to talk about.

And it is a cool pen, to be sure.

Cheers,

Jon

Blech. Another gaudy bauble. Bic has a long way to go before they catch up to the far classier Pelikan and MB limiteds.
