This weekend's trip back to Michigan to see my folks was profitable! I found my trusty old green Pentel Kerry 0.5 MP!

Problem: The cap has vanished.

Anyone know where I can find one? Doesn't have to be green, but I'd prefer that it was a complementing color like black, if a green one can't be found.

Ryan,z can you post a photo of the pens? Where did you get them originally? I'll try doing some search tonight on the Pentel.

Too bad about that cap. I have a black and always liked carrying it in my pants pocket in high school.

If you look up Pentel and write to them, they might help out. When I was a kid, I had a sliding sleeve pencil break at the plastic threads. My mom sent it to them and they sent a new one.

Are you also disappointed that the new ones say Kerry on them instead of having that big 5?
And does anybody else miss the old Quicker Clickers without the giant rubber grip?

If you don't find a cap somehow, you might be able to find a whole one cheap.

Some Amazon sellers have black, blue, and red ones for about $15. Haven't bought from any of them, though.

Looks like there are two versions of green ones. Is yours older, brighter green or the newer "olive green"?

Mine was the brighter green one in the top picture.

Good news, and a potential happy ending to this story. I contacted Pentel and got a response asking me to send the pencil in for full restoration - free of charge!

Good deal! I'm shipping it out tomorrow.

Hope they fix your pen as good as new!! I saw they have a pink one, and I might get one for myself if I see one in Japan.

Hey...speaking of which - I've got a favor to ask of you. I've got a friend with a pretty rare car that was imported from Japan a long time ago. He has the original title, which is written in Japanese. Could you take a look at it and translate what you can if I send you a copy?

The Kerry is a terrific little pencil. I can't wait to get mine refurb'd! Then all I'll need is a Pilot Vanishing Point pencil (where can I find one of those, anyway?) and my MP collection will be complete!

Sure, drop me an e-mail.

Hi,

Those look like really nice pencils!
My only worry is that the balance will not be correct for me. I have had quite a time with Pentel pencils regarding the center of gravity of their pencils. Does anyone know where the center of gravity for these pencils is with or without the cap?

I like the Pilot G-spec models since the center of gravity is centered on that band between the grip and the barrel.

(excuse us, as we talk of Pentel Sharp Kerry pencils, while we await word about Pentel)

Posted, I would guess it balances at the cap rim, where it's made to look like a cap ring. This is just from holding it between two fingers. And when put down on a desk, it spins around there pretty well, but then that's just where it touches the desk and everywhere else clears.

With the cap off, I'd say it balances a little ways up the metal ring with the grid, a quarter or third up. It's 4 1/8 inches that way.
Posted, it's 5 3/16 inches, counting the button. The funny thing about the Sharp Kerry is only slightly longer posted over capped, but then that's because the real button on the barrel end has to push the eraser cap button out.

The Sharp Kerry isn's skinny anywhere, which might be a deal breaker for you. It's wide in the middle for a pencil, and a little wider than usual for pencils at the grip. It's wider than the sliding sleeve model. Or is this Pilot G-spec one of those Dr. Grip fat things?

From what I can tell re: the pencil that Dillon uses, I think it's a member of the Dr. Grip things. From the pictures I've seen that sound like what he's describing, perhaps it's Dr. Grip after a couple of months on the Atkins diet. smile.gif

The Sharp Kerry is being shipped out on Monday. I can't wait to have it back! It was such a steadfast companion during college, and I really loved it.

I found a Pilot Vanishing in a "Bureau en Gros" in Montreal, the Canadian version of Staples. It was 17$ CA , pretty cheap for such a great pencil.
Good luck finding one.

Okay, this thread deserves an update, and the girls in the Pentel QA department deserve a big round of applause. The pencil came back to me on (get this) Saturday, totally refurb'd, and working fantastically. They sent it with a sleeve of erasers (including the one that was in the back end already) and they even threw some lead in there so I wouldn't have to root around in my desk for some!

Six days, kids. At least two of which (each way) were spent in transit.

That sets the standard. smile.gif
