Some of you may be aware that prior to the Washington DC Pen Show the Board of Directors of the Pen Collectors of America met in formal retreat assisted by a professional facilitator to continue a process of reorganization and reengineering of the PCA, setting both long and short term goals.
This is an ongoing project, but in the name of openness and accountability, we feel it is time to issue a summary of our preliminary findings.
First we set a series of personal values that we, as board members, bring or should bring to our job:
• Listening-to feedback and suggestions from others
• Service- to advance the goals of PCA
• Time-a willingness to give time and take action \
• Focus on Policy NOT personalities.
• Creative Thought and Action.
• Creative Recruitment of Board Members and Non-Board Committee Chairs and Other Workers
• Continued Involvement of Past Board Members
• Simplify the process of Board decision making. Key are functioning committees that communicate regularly with the full Board
Next, we set a series of five year goals as follow:
Five Year Goals:
1. Membership Goal of 2000 in five years
2. Involve more PCA members in committees and volunteer opportunities
3. improve Board Development /training and recruitment
4. Streamline Board operations
5. Create an interactive Web Site
6. Creating a digitized, downloadable Resource Library
Additional Short Term Goals:
• Offering a Pens For Kids activity or workshop at, at least 4 ( four) pen shows each year
• Making a larger, more colorful magazine
• Offering more PCA sponsored events at Pen Shows
• Adding more content to existing library
• Development of five year plan
We are sharing this brief exerpt of our retreat with the entire pen community. We welcome your comments and suggestions. If anyone wishes a more complete report of our retreat, please contact PCA Vice President Rick Propas, rickpropas@comcast.net.
